Does Grandeur OTS really smell?

Hi, I have read where a number of passengers on the Grandeur have said there was a heavy sewer odor. I wonder if any recent passengers have also detected this odor or if it has hopefully been corrected. I will be sailing on the Grandeur in April and again in June.

Yup, the GOS really does smell. We were up on the 7th deck and there was no smell, but our friends were on deck 4 and every time we went to their cabin the smell was strong in the hallway. One night the smell was so pervasive it made it up to the dining room. I am a plumbing contractor and recognized it immediately. No mistake about it........sewer. The problem was supposed to be taken care of in drydock in November but we sailed in December and it was still there. I am sure RCCL knows about it, so I don't know why they don't correct the problem. I'm sure a lot of folks will now post saying they did not smell anything, but I don't know how you could miss it.

As you say you are a plumber perhaps your nose is trained to smell such. I was on the Grandeur and I did not smell anything, granted I was on the 7th floor. We did not smell anything in the dining room either.

Often, what is mistaken for sewage smell is odors from the fuel oil being used, particularly noticeable when the ship is bunkering (refueling).

I was on the Granduer last May and yes there is a distinct "sewer" smell. The smell is especially noticeable when you disembark from Deck 2 (I believe). I did not smell it on any of the higher decks.

LOL Jenny, unfortunately I am on deck 2 :eek: for the April cruise and I am a bit concerned. In June we are on a higher deck and so the smell may not be ani issue. But I do wish they would correct the problem. I know some people have very sensitive noses others don't, so I do expect to have some say yes and others say no. RCCL already has full payment. My gut feeling tells me that that this Murder Mystery cruise will be a bit foul! lol lol lol :D .

Holy Batman!

We were on the Grandeur the week before Christmas in cabins 4555 and 4557. No smell in the cabin but definitely in the hallway and the Atrium. It was not an oil smell, I know what sh*t smells like and this was definitely a sewage smell. I just hate it when people try to discount what someone else has experience on a cruise. I think many of the cruise lines have drainage, plumbing and fermenting problems that result in these gross out smells.

Was on the AOS last week and found the odor there as well...it was on deck 4, didn't frequent deck 4 too often but certainly did smell it when I was there...yuck!

Not disagreeing with any of the prior posters, but we were on her twice last summer & never noticed a smell. First cabin was on deck 2, second was on deck 4, but there was not any area of the ship we didn't explore & never noticed any sewage-type smell. I can only conclude that it must vary by sailing for some reason since some notice the smell & others don't. My advice is to not worry about it. If you are determined to notice an unpleasant smell, you will likely find it (whether it is what you imagine it is or not). I'm sure you'll have a great time on both your cruises. We LOVE the Grandeur for it's size & the friendliness of it's staff.

I was on the Grandeur the week of February 5th, and believe me, there was an odor. It was especially bad on the last day of the cruise.

Hi Annie - I am also booked on the Granduer for June 24th out of Baltimore. We are staying on deck 2. I called my cruised specialist at Royal Caribbean and asked her about the sewer smell and she is going to call me back tomorrow. I hope people are exaggerating, because we have two cabins booked on deck 2. and are not looking forward to being grossed out by sewage. I will let you know what I hear.

Thanks Fay, will be looking for your post. The Grandeur is a gorgeous and am looking forward to enjoying it, just may not be as enjoyable while in the cabin. There are probably a lot worse things that could happen so will try not to let it have an impact on the fun.

Please let us know how it is Annieeee. We are booked on deck 4, I hope the smell won't be around in October... Although, we are bringing plenty of air fresheners/odor absorbers - just in case.

I really hope this isn't the case as we are bringing 4 first time cruisers with us!

I just got back from our cruise on the Grandeur. We were on Deck 3 and did not smell anything. On the final night during the 9pm comedian routine there was a smell but it smelled like natural gas and definitely not sewer. After a couple of minutes it went away but some of the people left the room just in case.

We were on Grandeur, July 04 noticed the smell as we were getting on & off ship on deck 2 near the elevator. Our cabin was on deck 3 never smelled it there. It wasnt anything that I stressed over & we didnt smell it constantly or everyday...

Sounds like it's either hit or miss with the smell. Guess we'll just keep our fingers crossed. :) I'm sure we'll have a good time regardless!

We just returned yesterday from the Grandeur of the Seas. Our cabin was located mid-ship on deck 4. The odor is present intermittently in the hallway. It is NOT evident AT ALL in the staterooms. We also noticed the odor intermittently on other decks. It's not terribly bothersome, but noticeable.

We sailed on the Grandeur on the 22nd of January and there definately was a sewer smell. I overheard the staff being told to get deodorizers. It was really bad one night in the Centrum that we had to leave that area. We never smelled it in our cabin on deck 2 though.

 

It wasn't bad enough to make you feel ill but it wasn't pleasant by any means.
