Peal Posted October 17, 2010 #2 Share Posted October 17, 2010 "Chief Doctor/Physician (oversees the entire shipboard medical facilities, treatment mostly to passengers and sometimes crew, if required). Current license, extensive experience with cardiac and primary care, trauma, internal, and emergency medicine required. Two to three years in subordinate positions on board ships required. Diploma from an accredited medical school and fluent English Language skills required. Salary range: $4800-6400 U.S. per month, depending on the cruise line." Wouldn't get very many Aussie doctors at that salary.

Unfortunately, Aussies working on ships based in Australia have to pay Australian income tax.

The_Big_M Posted October 17, 2010 #5 Share Posted October 17, 2010 Terms on that site are based on US based ships with tipping, not local ships with different conditions.
qqqqqq1234 Posted October 17, 2010 #6 Share Posted October 17, 2010 I am a physician and work on cruise ships for about 50% of my working year. The salary quoted is grossly misleading and out of date. In AU$ the salary which is made up of basic + professional fees (tax free) works out at about 15 - 17000 per month. Aus Traveller Posted October 17, 2010 #7 Share Posted October 17, 2010 Terms on that site are based on US based ships with tipping, not local ships with different conditions. Of course they are, but the remuneration paid locally would be in the same 'ball-park'. For instance, if it was only half what was paid on the US ships, no-one would work on the Aussie ships. There is an international agreement setting out payments for maritime workers, how many hours they can work per day and stipulating that the employer has to pay their travel expenses (flights and accommodation) to the ship and back home after each contract. The length of each contract is limited to a set maximum period.
