Ephesus shopping

Recommended Posts

Your tour guide will try to take you shopping at places that give kick-backs to the tour company and guide. This often means so-called factories... The main shopping area in Kusadasi is a bazaar neighborhood that starts directly across the street from the port terminal building (this is a very safe, fun pedestrian shopping zone). You do not need a guide to go to this area so you just need to get dropped back at the port in time to explore. Keep in mind that the Turks love to bargain (and they are very good at this skill) so be patient, have fun, and hold your ground!

Your guide may want to take you to the rug making cooperative school for a demonstration of rug making. We were taken there for lunch last year. I knew in advance we would be going there and decided we wanted to see the demonstration. It was excellent. None of us bought a rug and there was no real attempt to sell them. A couple of us asked prices and were given the answer and that was it. However we learned quite a bit, and at least one person in our group bought a rug in another port in Turkey. If you do not want to do this, tell them up front.

As Hank said there is lots of shopping near the cruise terminal.

Have posted this before,,but always,,good to remind newbies...many so callled name brands AREN T,,,so beward...if price too good ,,,,its fake...

Turks seem to be pretty up front about this. Both at the shopping area where the tour busses park at the ruins, and in the Kusadasi bazaar you will see signs advertising "Genuine Fake Watches." I've heard conflicting advice on whether you can bring these back to the US; some say one per traveller is OK, others say that US Customs will seize a fake watch if it uses a brand name trademarked in the US.

Our private tour to Ephesus stopped at a leather factory and we were subjected to a fashion show. Wonderful coats in thin, very soft leather, if you are into that sort of thing, but way too pricey for me.
