digby Posted November 19, 2010 #3 Share Posted November 19, 2010 We have been on three "O" cruises - two in an OS - and never noticed that there was a captain's dinner! What happens at such an event?
RetiredFL Posted November 19, 2010 #4 Share Posted November 19, 2010 I think you mean the Captain's Reception which is usually done on a sea day and is early enough that people can go to their dinner reservations. If I remember correctly it was from about 5-5:30pm and over about 6:30-7. There is nothing special in the GDR on that night. There is no photographer on Oceania ships so no posing with the Captain, etc. it is all rather low key. At the reception there is usually a free drink, some hors d'oeuvres and the band plays. We usually skip it as returning guests have the Oceania Club reception which is about the same and about the same time frame on another day. Kruzin Again ! Posted November 19, 2010 #5 Share Posted November 19, 2010 On the O cruises we've been on, its the 2nd night. The evening starts with a cocktail party hosted by the Captain in the show lounge, where he introduces all the department heads. Cocktails and nibbles are served. At the main dining room caviar is served, along with shrimp cocktail, and the main entrees generally are special such as filet and/or prime rib, duck, etc.
hondorner Posted November 20, 2010 #6 Share Posted November 20, 2010 ...We usually skip it as returning guests have the Oceania Club reception which is about the same and about the same time frame on another day. We've never intentionally skipped it, but on our last two Oceania cruises we were having such a good time we forgot about it, and on our last O cruise, we managed to forget about the Oceania Club reception, too. It's usually a mob scene -- nobody missed us .
A Knitter Posted November 20, 2010 #7 Share Posted November 20, 2010 During that time, we have the Martini Bar all to ourselves. :D
RetiredFL Posted November 20, 2010 #8 Share Posted November 20, 2010 Yes, you can sit there enjoying your libation while the line slowly snakes down the corridor past Martinis. If you eat early, the GDR is always usually empty. I don't remember the GDR serving a fancy meal that night but perhaps so. There is one night that there is caviar, etc and perhaps that is it. We enjoy all the food in the GDR enough that we really don't pay that much attention.

Perhaps you are referring to the "Captain's Reception", which is not held in the dining room, but rather in the Main Lounge. It is not a dinner, but a wine and cocktail gathering to introduce the officers and captain. That is quite often held on the second night at sea, but is changeable. susiesan Posted November 20, 2010 #10 Share Posted November 20, 2010 We usually wait about 15 minutes after the party has started, go in the other door and skip the receiving line, and have a cocktail or two. If you don't like what they have made and are passing around on the trays you can go to the bar and ask for something else or a glass of wine. Rare LHT28 Posted November 20, 2010 #11 Share Posted November 20, 2010 There is a special night in the Grand Dining room but I think it is closer to the end of the cruise ( might be wrong on timing) but they have the sorbet in between courses etc Will look through my Oceania Currents to see what it is called ..... unless someone knows??
