Haiti and cholera??

We'll be taking a family cruise with Royal in February with our 9 month old.

Can anyone recommend excursions for our Western Caribbean cruise: Labadee Haiti, Georgetown Grand Caymen, Foulmouth Jamaica, Cozumel Mexico. Particularly, baby friendly excursions please.

 

We were thinking of the ruins in Cozumel...has anyone been? Are they the Tulum ruins? Is that a good excursion? Also, we wanted to attempt Dunns River Falls...would you advise that with an infant?

 

 

We'll be stopping at Labadee, Haiti. I'm concerned about the recent Cholera outbreak in Haiti...will that be dangerous for our family and more importantly our infant AND do you think the cruise ship will cancel that port?

 

Has anyone been to that port recently to know how the cruise ship proceeded?

No, there are NO issues, while Labadee is part of Haiti it is not open to the public and it is run by RCL. All the supplies are brought from the ship. Cholera is not passed from person to person and is caused by drinking contaminated water or food neither of which you will be in contact with. There have already been many threads on the subject if you want to get more details.

We were there on 10 Nov on Explorer and Enchantment was also there. No one got sick. The food and water provided by the ship is perfectly safe and swimming in open water at the beaches is no threat either. Those getting sick in Haiti are drinking from rivers, streams, and standing water that contain high amounts of the bacteria and it is easily curable for those living in sanitary conditions and who have access to healthcare. The aid workers in the country are still there and not getting sick because they follow basic sanitation rules and drink bottled water and food prepared using those same rules. It takes millions of the bacteria to catch cholera which means ingesting quite a bit. It does not survive the digestive tract well so the concentration has to be high. There are other threads on the issue.

I would definitely NOT do this with an infant.

OP...I, too, would not advise trying to go up the falls in the water with an infant. It can be slippery in spots. However, if one of you wants to climb the falls (in the water), the other can take your baby and walk up the falls alongside using the stairs there...you just won't be together, but can probably se each other most of the way up. Just a suggestion.

 

Also, it is FALmouth, not FOULmouth...just don't want you getting in Dutch with the natives..hopefully just a typo on your part. Hope you have a great cruise!

okay great thx...my in laws are coming along too...they are less on the adventurous side and wouldnt mind walking up the stairs while my husband i attempt the falls.
