Nice walks around Port Chalmers?

Hello all, we will be docking in Port Chalmers for a day just before Christmas and wanted to go for a walk around town. We're not that worried about shore excursions or tourist attractions as such, as we have been to Dunedin before... just would like a good walk with nice things to look at, and maybe somewhere to get lunch along the way... ideally just in Port Chalmers itself as we'd rather just set out on foot from the ship. We are good walkers and can handle some reasonable hills and cover at least 5 or 6 km without any trouble. We also have wet weather gear in case of liquid sunshine.

Any suggestions?

many thanks :)

Port Chalmers itself is fairly small, and can be walked in well under an hour.

We walked up to the church, then continued up to a lookout and then the road ran out.

Another time we took the ships shuttle into the Octagon and walked to the Botanical Gardens. There are some lovely walks you can do through there, one of which takes you up a hill and through the Rhodo Glen, (we didnt have time to do that).

Other than that you could rent a car and drive down the Peninsula, taking walks from there. Two options , drive down the Northern side to Aramoana, very rugged and remote with lots of small bays along the way.....or drive into Dunedin to cross the harbour and drive down the Southern side to Portabello and the Gannet Colony. Fabulous walks can be taken from there.

Great photos thanks David. Fascinating debate too about whether or not it was windy. ;)

We'll look out for that lookout. I gather the church is historical.

Might also try to have a look in the maritime museum. Might be interesting.

From what I've seen trawling the web in the meantime, Port Chalmers is a bit of an arts n crafts place, so that might make the shops more interesting than usual.

Cheers.
