Jeff Posted April 14, 2013 #26 Share Posted April 14, 2013 Just finished reading Frank Braynard's "The Big Ship" about the history of the SS United States, which prompted a Google search and found this Cruise Critic thread. Thanks Jim and Stan for the Ocean Liner Row pic, the only recent comparable pics are those of Ford Island in Miami, Charlotte Amalie in St Thomas, and Nassau harbor pics aren't bad either, but they still don't hold water with the pics of the Manhattan waterfront in the 50s/early 60s. Glad to see there are others interested in these old ships, hope the Big U will be saved in some sort of capacity for posterity.

the_journeyman Posted April 24, 2013 #28 Share Posted April 24, 2013 Love the SS United States! I have a mostly finished model of it on my desk at home. I would have LOVED to sail on one of these grand ladies. JM

London-Calling Posted April 25, 2015 #31 Share Posted April 25, 2015 (edited) It is, I suppose, a stark reality that the cost of bringing her up to modern day sailing standards is a virtual impossibility due to cost(s) and other factors. NCL owned the SS united States for a few years. They actually promised to return her to service (they have since sold her and changed their mind). What they wanted was her US built hull which was a legal requirement for cruising Hawaiian waters. (They were expecting to increase their Hawaiian fleet). Although she has been gutted NCL said that her think still hull was still in very good condition. Unfortunately it is cheaper to build a new ship than try to return a very old one back to service. Philly Steve Posted April 25, 2015 #33 Share Posted April 25, 2015 We have 2 threads on the SS Unites states this one has a lot more info on trying to save it http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1032680&page=9 I really dislike NCL for many reasons and what they did not do with this ship is one of them Thanks George. At least NCL prolonged the effort to save "The Big U." So much work to be done.
