Cruise to Nowhere NYC Gem or Jewel question

I was looking into going on one of the one night cruises in February. Do they sail out far enough for the casino to be open? I think that's the only way I could get my husband on board.

Has anyone done a one-nighter before? Is it worth it? Would you pick one ship over the other? I've never sailed NCL before.

Ive been on the Gem but not the Jewel although I am scheduled to be on the jewel in february(not for a one day) I understand they are very similar but the crew on the Gem was first rate. I've never sailed NCL before.

Yes, the casino will be open...and jam-packed. The one night cruises to nowhere are notorious as party cruises...lots of gambling and drinking. It's not our cup of tea, so we wouldn't do one, but many people seem to enjoy them. There aren't a lot of differences between the Gem and Jewel, other than the Gem having bowling and a rock climbing wall.

Thanks!

We'll see what the husband says. Seems like an alternative for AC for us, probably cost the same.

The bowling sounds interesting, but seeing that I just won the award for "worst bowler" at a company event, I may not need to explore that option.

I have sailed both the Gem and Jewel. I prefer the Gem. The Jewel does not have the bowling alleys and the Spinaker Lounge on the Gem is a bit better. They have a roulette table in the Spinaker along with some bar type games such as shuffle board and I believe darts. Actually the Gem is my favorite out of the NCL ships I have sailed.

I also looked into the one nighter. The price seemed good but then they add on port charges and brought the price up quite a bit. For a few dollars more you can take a 3 or 4 night cruise. Just something to think about.

I was on the Gem last Jan for the 1 nighter. This was for my wife's 40th birthday (Group of 16) was great but went by very quick. I was also on the Jewel for a 7 day cruise this Nov, had a great time. We are thinking of taking another 1 night cruise this year . The Friday departures on the Gem are much cheaper then the Jewel. As noted above many people go on these cruises to gamble, drink and shop duty free. Last year there were several groups like ours with birthday (even sweet sixteens)

technically its not duty free. You have to leave the US for at least 48 hours to be duty free. They add the duty to what is sold. What you do save is local sales/use and excise taxes. In Nycity for cigs that is about $8.00 a pack...so instead of $25 for cigs its shoulb be about $35 per carton(adding back the federal excise taxes) and it adds about a $1 to the cost of the liquor per bottle.

We went on the Jewel for a 7night this past May, it was WONDERFUL. We're booked on the CTN in Feb for one night on the Gem. Have never been on the Gem before, but am looking forward to checking it out. Got a good deal, it comes out to less then $10 an hour....does anyone else have any comments about a cruise to nowhere?

We're doing both Cruises To Nowhere in February back to back. Can't wait!!!

We're doing both back to back one night cruises in January....it should be quite the adventure. We've also booked the following 10 day cruise to recover from the back to back party cruises. :):D:)

I wish they had an occassional one-nighter in the summer from NYC!

The lowest cost is that of an inside cabin. It is "only" 79 per person but look what it really costs for 2 people. This is lowest price.

Price Summary Total Price: $319.84 USD 319.84 Cruise Fare $158.00 USD 158.00 Gov't Taxes & Fees $161.84 USD 161.84 Payment Schedule Final Payment$319.84 In the winter you don't get to enjoy the pool area so the cost became a deal breaker for us. The longer cruises are much more reasonably priced in all categories as far as we have seen.
