Cayman Souvenier Item?

You could get a "turtle " souvenier, from the turtle farm, or a postcard from HELL (a little goofy and hardly worth the trip there). There is a Caymans hat from the Hard Rock Cafe (VERRY COOL). A movie made for you from your 'Sting Ray excursion is nice. A little sand from 7 mile beach is neat but my personal favorite is either a Tortuga Rum Cake (which is special, but could also be purchased online) or a bottle of Tortuga Rum....which can "only" be purchased in the Caymans. Last year we brought back 6 bottles for 62 dollars, should be set til next time.

Thanks! I'll go for the turtle and postcard. Never thought about the sand! My dad has a sample of sand from his brother who lost both of his legs storming the beach at Normandy. He keeps it on his desk at his house. Maybe I'll just start a collection!

We collect sand from the places we visit too, and here is the neat thing I do with it. I take a clear glass ornament and put some sand in it. Then I laminate a picture of us at that particular place, and put the picture inside the ornament on top of the sand. It's a little tricky to get the picture inside, but if you wrap it around a pencil and then put it in it'll work. Then write on the back of the ornament with a gold permanent marker the place and date, and add a gold bow to the top. Then you have your own souvenir! Just be careful when you store them, if you tip them you'll have a sandy mess ;)

It makes a great, inexpensive gift too. We went on a Girl Scout trip to VA Beach a few years ago and I made one of these for the leader, with the sand we saved and a group picture of the girls and the leader on the beach...it was a huge hit.

Ditto on the Toruga rum.

We found adorable Christmas ornaments at the Turtle Farm gift shop - a stingray wearing a santa hat, and a sea turtle wearing a red scarf! All you can eat rum cake sample while you shop there too.

If you do Stingray City, they will probably make your pic with the stingray so that is a cool memento.

We did an island tour and so stopped by the Hell post office and sent ourselves a postcard from Hell (as well as our friends). Still waiting for it to get here (it was just last week)...

I hate to rain on anyone's parade, but I think customs frowns on anyone bringing soil or sand back to the US. It could contain parasites that are foreign to our soil. (Also pieces of coral).

Also, because of how much the coral has been savaged, black coral is also banned from being brought back to the US as well as Turtle shell objects.

I too have collected charms from each port. I also like the onyx figurines and games found in the Cayman's and Cozumel.

I've always brought some sand home from different US beaches, so I never thought about sand not being allowed into the country from foreign destinations. I looked it up on the US Customs site and this is what it said (I was feeling like Derf! lol):

Soil, Sand, Minerals, and Shells

Soil-borne organisms threaten both plants and animals. If you visited a farm or ranch in a foreign country, agricultural specialists may have to examine and disinfect your shoes or clothing. Vehicles must also be cleaned of any soil. No soil or earth of any kind is allowed into the United States without a permit issued in advance by USDA Plant Protection and Quarantine Permit Unit. Pure sand, such as a small container of decorative beach sand, is usually allowed. Always check with the permit unit in advance for details. (http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/travel/clearing_goods/agri_prod_inus.xml)

I brought an empty water bottle partially filled with sand home with me from Jamaica, Grand Cayman, and Cozumel. Of course I didn't check with anyone beforehand, but from the above I would guess it would be okay. I might go ahead and declare it from now on though, just to be safe.

I also have a charm bracelet and am looking for great charms from each port. Let me know what you guys have purchased in the past. I definitely want a stingray charm.

I bought a Stingray City silver charm from the little store next to Captain Marvin's office. It was a circle shape with a stingray inside it, with a little hanging tag that said Stingray City. It was $9.

I think that after a day at the beach you may accumulate more sand in your towels and shoes then you would need for a little sand souvenier. I dont think a pailful would be in order but a handful, or enough to fill one of those mini liquor bottles would serve as a great souvenier. Of course, if you feel the need to declare it....lol, its up to you. As far as turtle items, yes "real" turtle items are not allowed,,,,kinda creepy as a souvenier anyway. The store at the turtle farm has plently of fake turtle and fake stingray trinkets there as well. ( Don't think youre allowed to take home a real sting ray either) as well as charms and nicky nacky things.

LOL at the sand in the shoes and towels...how true! I guess I would feel silly declaring my "sand", but when I saw those fines listed on that site, something like $1,000 for trying to bring banned items back (soil, meats, etc) it made me think twice! Too funny!

Hi:

My Cayman favorites:

  • Stingray Beer (if you like beer)
  • Tortuga Rum Cake (can purchase on the RCI ships, not sure about other cruise lines)
  • Tortuga Rum
  • Black Coral Jewelry
  • Stingray Jewelry (charm, ring, earrings, etc.)
  • Something from "Hell" (mug, t-shirt, shot glass, etc.)

Of course I always go to my favorite T-shirt shop (across from the KFC in GeorgeTown, it has a sand floor) and see what they have.
