Thank you Don for the clarification.

All we want to do is enjoy our honeymoon, and to be quite honest - it doesn't matter what we are wearing, class doesn't show by what you wear, it is the person that has the class!!!!

Enjoy!

You will find that no one cares once you are on board. Congratulations and enjoy your honeymoon...

On our most recent cruise on the Eclipse in December, the majority of passengers abided by some semblance of a dress code every evening in the MDR. On formal nights, not everyone wore tuxes or dark suits or formal gowns for the ladies, but I honestly didn't see more than two or three pair of jeans in the MDR for the entire week and none on formal nights. Many men wore light suits instead of dark and I saw quite a few that apparently didn't want to wear a tie. A couple wore smart casual in our dining area on each of the formal nights.

That being said and to answer the OP's original question, Celebrity's dress code used to state that it was appropriate to stay in the stated dress for the entire evening, regardless of where you might go other than back to your cabin. So on formal nights, you were expected to remain in your formal wear as long as you were in the public rooms. People that changed back into shorts and tennis shoes were actually snubbed by the crew and other passengers on an Infinity cruise I took in 2002. The rules have now changed and even though formal wear is still requested on two nights of a seven night cruise, your specialty venues now allow smart casual every night and now it is requested that the dress of the evening is adhered to in the MDR and theater only. However, it is also suggested that at least smart casual is worn during evening hours, regardless of the stated dress of the evening or the public room.

Can you wear shorts and flip flops in the casino? Yes, you won't get kicked out. But be prepared to be stared at and possibly have people make snide remarks either to your face or at least within hearing distance. For at least the present time, you will look out of place. If that is going to make you feel uncomfortable, keep your long pants on. Celebrity is lowering its standards a lot in order to attract a broader audience, but it isn't down to Carnival standards....yet.

Are you kidding me? Do you actually think I care what people say either to my face or within hearing distance. More than likely I paid at least the same or more for my cabin as they did. I am confident enough in myself to let stupid people talk.

And we have been on Carnival in the past, we saw people wearing t-shirts to formal night in the main dining room. Guess what? I was able to keep my meal down and the ship did not sink.

Just a thought....When we took our first cruise during the seventies passengers dressed formally for the Captain's reception and on every other night they dressed the way they would for an upscale land based restaurant at the time. Today most passengers dress more casually than they did then, but dress the way most people currently do for an upscale land based restaurant.

Well, on our cruise my Husband and I will be appropriately dressed while in the dining room - whether it be on a formal night or not. After dinner, as we have done in the past, we will go back to our cabin and change into more comfortable clothing. Comfortable clothing may be shorts of proper length and a tshirt that advertises. We are going to be on vacation and are not going to stress about "dressing up" each night. Quite honestly, we live in Florida and the majority of what we wear now and what we will be wearing on the cruise, are a "perfect fit".

The price of this cruise certainly does not justify being dictated on how we should dress.

Come on people, we are not on this cruise to try impress anyone, lose the stuffed shirts and relax a wee bit!;)

I guess I need to ask, if you already made up your mind that you would wear shorts and flip flops in the public rooms, even on formal nights, why did you even ask the question? I get a kick out of people who come and post a question, despite knowing what they want the answer to be, and when they get responses that they don't like, they become defensive. Why even ask the question in the first place when you've already made up your mind on how you're going to dress? And BTW, you don't have to be dressed like you're on the beach to be relaxed and those dressed nicely are not stuffed shirts. I mean, if you think those who maintain a certain level of dressing up are stuffed shirts, then I guess those who wear shorts, t-shirts with advertising and flip flops on formal nights can be considered what.............??????

I dont care what you wear in the Casino...unless you are sitting next to me and I am losing, than everything you are wearing will be annoying.

On past cruises, on Formal Night I usually stay in my Tux until my wife goes to bed and then I change into something a little more comfortable and head to the Casino.

I couldnt really say what other men do as I usually just check what women are wearing. Discreetly of course.

There's a difference between Carnival and Celebrity.....really!!

You strike me as one who says 'I paid my money, I don't need to follow the dress codes/smoking/chair hogging, etc. policies.' It's obvious you don't care about other's opinions, that's certainly your prerogative. I don't care that you don't care. How about caring for the policies that the cruiselines establish for the comfort, ambiance, safety, etc., of its passengers?

Wow! Why are you so defensive? Did you take my post wrong? I was not offering an opinion on the matter; I was telling you what may happen and that is all. On the 2/02 Infinity cruise that I referenced earlier, I was one of the people who was snubbed by others when my feet hurt so bad from a shore excursion that day that I had to change into my tennis shoes. I wasn't going to wear tennies with a dark suit, so I changed into shorts and a polo shirt; smart casual for day time. I was stared at, snickered at, saw whispering as I walked by couples, and the final insult was being refused service at the pizza station in the buffet by a staff worker who told me I could not be served because I was not abiding by the formal dress code of the evening.

That has now changed on Celebrity; you won't find that anymore. However, I learned my lesson - if I want to cruise casually, I go on a different line. If I want to sail on Celebrity , I fully expect in advance that I will be forced to dress up sometimes when I don't want to, and I abide by the rules, suggestions, or whatever else anyone wants to call the dress code of Celebrity. If you want to take the attitude that it's your money, your vacation, and you're going to do whatever you want to, maybe you should consider sailing on a different line. But don't shoot the messenger - I'm on your side of the fence, the difference between us being that I believe in abiding by the rules and suggestions the cruise line sets down for the sake of all involved.

One final note: you have an interesting opinion of the human race if you think that people talking about an observation they have just made are stupid. It says a lot about you.

On the most recent cruise, that dress code wasn't observed. Many people really dressed down. I saw people who didn't even dress smart casual on formal nights. Flipflops and souvenir tee shirts on formal night are awful. However, it happened. The guy in the CVS teeshirt was the worst dressed formal person that I have ever seen. That shirt was so bad...stained. Even if the airline lost their luggage, the ship will give you better clothes to wear and lend you formal attire. There is no excuse for the poor attire. I even heard somebody say that people dress better on Carnival. In the effort to sell cabins, Celebrity is overlooking the dress code. Remember "X the rules."

It sounds like you had such a good time on your last cruise that I bet you can't wait to pack up and go again.........:)

Needless to say I am new to Cruise Critic; and new to cruising as well. I don't know which scares me more, the "adults" on Cruise Critic or being on the water for an extended amount of time.

How can this forum go from a person asking about proper attire in a casino go to a ridiculous debate. Everyone has gotten out of control!

We are trying to decide a cruise ship to book, and for us the very last thing we are going to worry about is what we wear. Okay, I will wear the correct clothes in while dining, but after that - I am will be on vacation.

Isn't the purpose of a vacation to relax? My intention is to do just that, relax.

I will wear what I want to wear, if you don't like it - momma always said "if you can't say something nice, say nothing at all".

My message here to everyone is - if I am comfortable in what I wear, and you are comfortable in what you wear, that's all that matters. Why is it such a concern to anyone other than who is wearing whatever.

If you think these people are ate up do a search for "French Fries in the MDR", I think it's the same whack jobs. Hey lets ask about breakfast at the buffet, shorts and flip flops, sweats and tee shirt or tux?

That was easily the most ridiculous thread I ever followed, though probably not the most ridiculous ever...;)

We have gone on at least 20+ cruises, several being Celebrity. I have seen very few individuals in jeans in MDR and they were not asked to leave. You must realize that jeans are not considered to be casual by some standards, many were dressed up in jeans with dress shoes. I do remember wearing gowns and tuxedos but they were never the majority of the dining room. I think it has gone where it needs to go to let you choose. You do not need to EVER dress up to go to the casino and NO ONE looks down at you! I am not staying in my formal attire and going into a smoke filled room, they are happy to have you spend your money in any attire.

Which is why there will NEVER be a dress code for the casino.
