Snorkling Advice?

Old Tom

Recommended Posts

Taking the NCL Spirit in May. Destinations are Costa Maya, Belieze City, Roatan Island, and Cozumel. Companions want to snorkle, I'm not into it but will go along. I'm responsible for planning. Question(s): Which port has the best snorkling experience? Any recommendation for a particular company/cruise line sponsored/independent? Thanks for any advice.

You'd do better if you book independently. We visited Belize & Cozumel a couple of years ago & booked the ship's excursions. We'd have had better snorkeling in our bath!!! Hardly any fish & herded around like cattle. As we are used to the Maldives & Red Sea, Belize & Cozumel were a great disappointment. Wish we had booked independently

Try Maya Chan resort in Costa Maya. You can enjoy a beach day while your friend snorkels the reef right off the beach.

Ditto for Bananarama in Roatan.

In Cozumel, try Playa Palancar, your friend can sign up for the boat trip out to the adjacent reff which leaves right from the beach.

We are going on the Spirit 4/3. Same stops. We are taking taxi to Corona Beach and Dzul Ha Beach Club in Conzumel. About 6 miles from Port, easy to get to/ back and good snorkeling from shore. Belize just going into port to shop. Costa Maya taxi to Malaha and walking to beach, understand not best snorkeling but better than lakes in Illinois. Last, My opinion: Roatan is the best for snorkeling off a cruise ship. We don't have a lot of time so you can't see everything. Last year I snorkeled at Half Moon Bay (Check out Google Earth). The Bay is beautiful, and the reef is within 5- 10 Yards from shore(No Beach, shore then water). I actually scraped my stomach trying to get to deeper water. The bay is a Half circle with No current. It reminded me of swimming in a small lake. We spent 2 hours, which was enough if your out of shape and took 150 pictures. We had a private driver for 2 for the day, EXCELLANT. We then drove along coast and shopped. Drove up on the hills and looked at houses. It was a Great Day. Doing the same driver (Herbert) this year, he is going to take us somewhere that he goes, not where tourist go. I want to see what us cruisers don't get to see. He sent me pictures last year after we exchanged Emails .
