wantocruisemore Posted March 3, 2011 #1 Share Posted March 3, 2011 We'll be on the Navigator this summer. My husband asked me tonight if he would be able to buy cigarettes onboard duty free on our upcoming Med cruise like he has always done on our caribbean cruises. Anyone know? Just thought I would ask while I was thinking about it.
hammer52 Posted March 3, 2011 #2 Share Posted March 3, 2011 You will be able to buy duty free cigarette on your Med cruise, but you will not have the same brands to you find on the carribean cruises. They are mostly european brands on the ship.
isdoo Posted March 3, 2011 #3 Share Posted March 3, 2011 However they are also dearer than cruises that are in the Caribbean. Might be cheaper to stock at duty free on your way over. They add on VAT to all prices.
peteukmcr Posted March 3, 2011 #4 Share Posted March 3, 2011 There was no duty free available on our Adventure sailing out of Barcelona last year, RCI kept everything covered up and turned the general store into a store selling the brand where everything is $10 (ladies apparel). Many people complained that there were no cigarettes nor liquor for sale, but RCI said they were not allowed to sell them as we were only visiting EU ports. Not sure whether that will apply to your Navigator sailing as I'm not sure if it depends on your departure port and those it will be visiting. melbur Posted March 3, 2011 #5 Share Posted March 3, 2011 If you do not stop at a non EU country in your itinerary, they will not be available for sale.

Just thought I would ask while I was thinking about it. It depends on your route. There are no duty free sales within EU any more so if you are just going to EU countries (Spain, France, Italy etc) then no. If you go to any non EU country like Croatia then yes. wantocruisemore Posted March 3, 2011 Author #7 Share Posted March 3, 2011 We're going to be visitng Greece, Sicily (Italy) and Turkey. Maybe we'll be able to since we'll be in Turkey. We're sailing out of Civitavecchia.

seaofwonder Posted March 3, 2011 #9 Share Posted March 3, 2011 Great question! We'll stock up on the way out of the country. Don't want to chance DH not getting his Marlboros on board.
wantocruisemore Posted March 3, 2011 Author #10 Share Posted March 3, 2011 Turkey isn't in the EU yet so you will be able to buy duty free. Does this mean you can buy on the ship in the duty-free shop anytime it is at sea or do you have to be in port in Turkey to buy? Sorry, for all the questions. Just a little confused because I definitely don't want to spend time either running all over Rome trying to find his cigs to stock up pre-cruise or worse, have him be without them the entire cruise (in which case everyone in our group will be miserable). In my experience, if the ship calls at even one non-EU port, then the duty-free shop opens whenever the ship is at sea. As has been posted earlier, Adventure didn't have a duty-free shop because all ports were EU

But I hope to find out definitely from anyone on this board that's going on the Navigator before us, Twiggers, hopefully??? :)
lvcruiselover Posted March 4, 2011 #13 Share Posted March 4, 2011 I was on the Brilliance in May, 12 night med which included a stop in Turkey. There was a duty free shop open when we were at seas. I saw the regular brands and they also had some American Spirits which you usually don't see.
