Advice on a hotel in San Juan

We have a cruise and flight booked for March 2012. I didn't think reserving a hotel for one night so far in advance would be difficult, but it seems that many of the hotels are already fully booked. So I made a reservation at the Intercontinental. I was wondering if this hotel is too far away from the port and Old San Juan. I would like to go out for dinner that night, and not eat at the hotel. Has anyone stayed there and know how much a taxi is?

Also, if anyone has any suggestions on other hotels. It is only for one night, but I am a bit picky! Cleanliness is important to me, but it does not have to be oceanfront.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer. It is appreciated!

A taxi from the Intercontinental to either Old San Juan or the port will be $20. Going to the port you will pay an additional $1 per bag. The ride to either place is about 20 minutes.

There are many restaurants within walking distance of the hotel.

We have cruised out of San Juan many times. We stay at the Embassey Suites,a two block walk to the beach. They have a large pool.At night they have a two hour free cocktail hour and full breakfast in the morning for all guest. It has a small casino and a Outback steak house in the lobby area.

If you want you can take a bus[we have]into old San Juan and a cab back to the hotel. This hotel is about three blocks from where u are booked.

We have stayed there. Its very nice and they have a very good pool. The food at the pool eating area is a little expensive. A cab to the port will be about 20 bux and a dollar or two per bag. As far as eating at a nice place, you will have one of the nicest restaraunts in SJ in your hotel. There is a Ruth Chris Steak House in the hotel. As you may or may not know, they are expensive BUT very good. We ate there. Eveything was Al Carte, so thats how the price adds up. We actually like the Embassy Suites too. They have a full breakfast included in the price and its very good. We like to eat a hearty breakfast before heading out since we are not sure when we will eat on the ship. We also like the Marriott in Condado.

We used the Marriott Courtyard Miramar and it was really nice. No problem with clean. We paid too much and could have Pricelined it for less but we were a large group with some staying two night and other one. Location was OK and about equidistant from airport, port and OSJ. They have two on-site restaurants - a bistro which was pretty good and a very fancy place that was too expensive for us. Otherwise several fast food places and a grocery store up the street.

Thanks for your advice. The Embassy Suites looks nice, but they seem to be booked as well. I have tried booking hotels online and by calling the reservation number, but many hotels are fully booked.

Is this normal for hotels in San Juan to be booked so far in advance?

What date are you reserving for......I made reservations at both La Concha and Radisson for the period from March 18-26. Too early to try Priceline w/o any evidence of winning bids......I know the week of March 12th is a school recess week in San Juan........I can't imagine all rooms are booked already for next March.....I'm sure other options will be available. Keep your current reservation and continue searching. every few weeks

I am not sure whether you were trying to book at Sheraton OSJ but I know that they require a 2 nights stay on weekends (unless you hit them very early)....therefore if you only put in one weekend night, they say there are no rooms available. Maybe others are the same.

Have you thought about Priceline or Hotwire , if you do your homework on Hotwire and go to betterbidding you can use the ammenties chart and know what hotel you are getting . They usually have the Intercontinenetal on there for half of what it books online . I just got OSJ Sheraton for our oct cruise for $110 / night including all fees and could have booked just one night chose to book 2 nights as we wanted 2 days pre cruise . This is our 4th trip to San Juan I have always went this way , I have had hotels such as El San Juan Hotel and casino , The Marriot Stellaris all for way under the going rate. Now remeber once you buy them there is no going back they are yours. So be sure you are not going to cancel your cruise . But its easy and I always get a great place.

I know when I was looking to book a hotel for my upcoming cruise, most of the hotels would only book a 2 night stay. I got the Caribe Hilton for $90.00 per night, but I am staying 2 nights. I am thrilled with the price!

That is a great rate. Did you get that price for the Hilton from Priceline?

A lot of the hotels in San Juan are going to the "must stay more than one night" policy. Lucky for us we were able to call the Sheraton and talk to their Reservations Manager on duty and got a room.

Don't stay at the Sheraton Old San Juan, it had mold in the bathtub and under the sink lid and I also had to call room service at ten and night cause I couldn't find one washcloth in the room. Imagine getting ready for bed without a washcloth. The Marriot Stellaris is great.
