Travellers Checks?

Recommended Posts

Yes, you can cash them on the ship.

Having said that,,, what is she worried about? Losing the cash? The checques getting stolen and/or misplaced?

Have you ever read the terms and conditions for "how to get the checques replaced"? Almost impossible to fulfill. Where on a cruise ship are you going to get the checques replaced? Where in a foreign port (when you're only there for 4 - 6 hours) are you going to get them replaced? When was the last time you lost or misplaced your cash or had it all stolen?

My opinion only, but the risk vs. reward of cash to travellers checques is way over blown.

My wife and I just split the cash evenly betwen us. If something happens to one of us,,,,, we're not completely down and out.

When we get to the hotel or on the ship,,, the money goes into the safe. When we go out, or go ashore, we only carry what we need for the day.

Side Note: Had a friend who went to Vegas with his wife. They accidently left their travellers checques at home on the dresser.

Called home, and verified, and wrote down the sequence of checque numbers. Went to get replacements, thinking they could just void out the old checques. NOPE, not allowed. They were stuck in Vegas for 3 days with only the cash they had on hand. A couple of hundred dollars. Only enough to eat.

Does anyone use traveller checks anymore? The safest thing is leave your

money in your checking account and notify your bank where you are going

to be travelling to and go to an ATM and get cash. I do that when I go to

Europe and it is lot easier than trying to cash checks and exchange your

cash you have on you.

As a matter of fact, YES! I still use American Express traveler's checks and have never had a problem using them. You can cash them at the Purser's desk or at the casino counter. And no fees are charged for doing so!

We also always carry travellers cheques. No they can not necessarily be instantly replaced, but eventually they can be and that is better than not at all. We also always travel with emergency money on a credit card.

I am an American living in France and we often host American friends and family when they come travel Europe with us. The easiest and safest way for North Americans to get cash in Europe (and many other places away from home) is to make withdrawals from ATMs. Call your bank to let them know you'll be travelling abroad, ask if there are any withdrawal limits, make sure you know your 4 digit pin, and you're good to go. The cash will come out in local currency and at least in a lot of Europe, banks cannot charge ATM fees! There is an ATM on the ship where you can withdraw dollars too.

We do use traveller's checks when we travel. We use them the day(s) before and day(s) after the cruise. The can be cashed at the purser's desk with no problems. My DW feels very comfortable with them, and if she's comfortable then I'm going to have a good vacation. :)

Last year we used a couple hundred to pay down our cruise folio. Being members of AAA has its advantages as we get them free; no one has ever turned them down.

The only problem with this is that my checking account is at a credit union. Before I went on my cruise in February, I contacted them and let them know that I was going to be out of the country. They informed me that my ATM card cannot be used outside of the United States. However, it did work on the ship itself because the ATM belongs to a mailing address in Miami.

You can save the ATM and traveler's check fees by using any debit or credit card on your S&S account. Simply insert your S&S card into a slot machine in the casino and get some gambling credit. Then simply upload the credit back to your S&S card without ever gambling and take the card to the casino cashier and get that cash. There is no charge and no ATM fee as it shows up as an entertainment charge not a cash advance. You'll even get miles on your reward card if you used that for your S&S account. I think the daily limit for that is $1,000.
