No we were not..Do you think this was why the delay re:disembark? and why they were paging MD's at 9am? Not good, we should have been informed:(

Yes I read that inspectors checked the ship on Disembarkation day

What is even more disturbing is that they knew there was a problem before we arrived

read item #11

This is the first time I have been sick with a gastro bug on any ship let alone Oceania

Lynda and Debbie,

Martha, had it bad and the couple next to us and no one told us we were to report the illness. Our butler told us that they were taking the ice buckets out of the rooms because of the illness on the ship. It was alot more than 19.

I agree

There were many people stricken with this bug

I stayed in the cabin as much as possible to avoid contamination & took precautions when I did leave

but alas I got it twice plus the cold going around.....not a happy camper :(

Besides constant wiping down of banisters etc. in public areas, an easy way to spread sickness is by following someone (who is possibly coming down with a virus) in the food line and picking up the utensils they used to serve themselves at the buffet.

This is why it is so importnat that the crew, with their latex gloves, should serve passengers and not allow passengers to serve themselves in the Terrace Cafe.

We were astounded, when aboard the Marina, the center buffet station was allowing people to serve themselves. Certainly a departure from the smaller ships. After speaking to Boris, it was decided that more of the crew would be used at the center station to avoid this happening. When we left, (Feb. 26) it was still being implemented.

Just curious why the topic of this thread is merely "Interesting" instead of something more descriptive of the issue such as "CDC Investigation Update on the MV Marina".

Interesting because we were never told there was an outbreak nor encouraged to report any illness as reported on the CDC site

Mid cruise there was a video on the TV if you happened upon it regarding hand washing etc...

I knew something was going around when mid cruise they moved the serving utensils from the bread & butter station in the Terrace

Up to that point I thought it was something that did not agree with me or too much sun & heat

The S &P shakers were still on the table, most cruise line remove those when an outbreak of something is going around

No notice in our cabin

The cleaning of the public areas increased near the end of the cruise but too late for some

I did notice in the casino the machines we not being wiped down as frequently are they do on the R ships .. I wiped the machine before & after I used it.

Since they knew there was a problem before our Feb 26th cruise we should have been notified

You are right - in theory anyway. They did change this procedure at some point on our cruise and that was my first clue that something was going on (in addition to excessive cleaning by crew, wiping down the tables with disinfectants after each passenger left, ice buckets removal and TV spot about washing hands). I guess we were just lucky not to get sick.

I say you are right only in theory because the way the latex gloves are used (on all ships) is one of my pet peeves. The staff, especially at the Waves grill, feel that they are TOTALLY STERILE simply because they wear latex gloves. As the result of this, they handle most of the food with their GLOVED HANDS (such as picking up french fries, hot dogs, garnish, etc. by hand instead of utensils). What they forget is that they handle EVERYTHING ELSE in the meantime while wearing those same gloves - so they are not much cleaner than clean hands would be. That is why I would insist that all food be handled with utensils and never by hands, even if they wear latex gloves, which only lead to a false sense of security (by both the servers and passengers). The gloves should also be changed much more frequently than they are - for the above reasons.
