sail gal Posted May 9, 2011 #1 Share Posted May 9, 2011 Will be embarking Oceania ship Nautica in Venice and be in port for two days. Is there a way to get to San Marco from the cruise terminal without taking a excursion? Is there a vaparetto stop near the terminal? Water taxis available? Many thanx

Earl Rosebery Posted May 9, 2011 #3 Share Posted May 9, 2011 Will be embarking Oceania ship Nautica in Venice and be in port for two days. Is there a way to get to San Marco from the cruise terminal without taking a excursion? Is there a vaparetto stop near the terminal? Water taxis available? Many thanx You will probably be at the large Marittima terminal. There is no vaporetto stop at the main cruise terminal. You have 4 options (at least) without taking an excursion. 1. water taxis available but expensive. 2. Alilaguna M line water bus connects the cruise terminal with St. Mark's Sq. Departures every 30 minutes during the day. http://www.alilaguna.it 3. 'People mover' tram to Piazzal Roma for 1 euro and no 1 or no 2 Vaporetto to St Mark's 4. tram to Piazzal Roma and 35 min level walk to St mark's.. Recommended reading to enjoy your visit http://www.veniceforvisitors.com Rick Steve's guide has lots of suggested walks. 'City of falling Angels.' I would combine walking and the no 1 vaporetto to get a taste of Venice. Walk when you can and take the vaporetto when you are tired or want a mini cruise on the Grand Canal. Finally I suggest you reserve the Doge's palace to avoid the lines. You can do it at http://www.veniceconnected.com There are other ways to book....just google
Rare LHT28 Posted May 9, 2011 #4 Share Posted May 9, 2011 According to the port schedule Nautica for 2011 will be at San Basilio & San Marta http://www.vtp.it/calendario/ricerca.jsp?CercaNave=OK&password=null&CodNave=162&CodArmatore=&Giorno=&Mese=&Anno=
Earl Rosebery Posted May 10, 2011 #5 Share Posted May 10, 2011 According to the port schedule Nautica for 2011 will be at San Basilio & San Marta http://www.vtp.it/calendario/ricerca.jsp?CercaNave=OK&password=null&CodNave=162&CodArmatore=&Giorno=&Mese=&Anno= In that case, there is a Vaporetto stop at San Basilio. Also, depending on where the gate to San basilio is located, you could walk to St Mark's via the Accademia bridge in 30 minutes or so. It would be about 1.25 to 1.5 miles

dougt1957 Posted May 10, 2011 #7 Share Posted May 10, 2011 Smaller ships like Nautica usually dock at San Basilo. We walked from there when we were there last year on Insignia. There is a Vaporetta stop a short walk away. Once you pass that go left and it you will find the Accademia Bridge. Once you cross that just keep following the signs for Piazza San Marco. Don't worry about getting lost. That's how you will discover many wonderful sights in Venice. A good map will help. It's relatively small, and flat except for the steps over the canals. St. Mark's square is wonderful in the evening after the big ships leave. Several small orchestras play into the evening. The best views of Venice will be when you are arriving or leaving, from an upper deck.
TurfTycoon Posted May 10, 2011 #8 Share Posted May 10, 2011 If you are on the Mediterranean Mosaic cruise departing Venice on 4th June 2011 (I know I am :D) then the ship will be docked at San Basilio Terminal Berth VE29. Regards, Larry
GeorgesGal Posted May 10, 2011 #9 Share Posted May 10, 2011 Venice is VERY walk=able as long as you are able. Good directions already given by others, so I won't be redundant. We explored the side canals and found some wonderful structures and 'neighborhoods' hidden along them. And if we found the front doors opening to the piazza inside, we took the hint and ventured in. So many beautiful gardens har hidden behind those doors, and art galleries, botique hotels, a library and some specialty museums which we would have missed if we had not accepted the 'invitations'. Go and enjoy - and keep your eyes open for those silent invitations.
