Space under the airplane seat

How much room is there under the airline seat to put a carryon bag?

What size carryon would fit?

I'm thinking rather then worry about available space in the overhead, we could just use the space under the seat?

A smaller carry on or day pack, or a larger purse is commonly put under the seat in front of you. If you go much larger than that, it cuts into your leg room.

The biggest legal carry ons won't fit very comfortably under the seat.

If you are trying to stow a 22" bag you need to use the upper storage.

As CruserBruce noted for under your seat a purse or a day pack is fine along with say other items such as a medium sized computer bag.

Of course if you are in a bulk head everything needs to go above during takeoff and landing.

Not much goes under the seat. It is a small space. A smallish medium bag (especially tote style or backpack with no stiff walls) or purse. If you are unlucky enough to have the seat with the "media box" under your chair there is less space than usual. Another caution is that it is somewhat hard to get and retrieve stuff under the seat due to the pitch of seat and the lack of room between rows.
