Why are the Paradise and the Inspiration switching places.

Another reason is for upgrades and refurbishments. The Paradise is needing to get the waterworks area and evolutions of fun. These things are added in drydock. Inspiration already has these things and can be positioned on the west coast for a while. (Most of the time, the drydock occurs in the Bahamas area).

Paradise is not getting waterworks. John Heald stated this a while back. Whenever a cruise ship needs go into drydock they usually go to the closest drydock facility. They usually switch ships every few years to a new homeport.

The Paradise went through a dry dock in SF in 2008/09.

Sometimes ships needing a dry dock do go to the closest, but not always , as different yards and facilities do different things.

 

Also its usually a bidding process and if the closest yard facility is not the cheapest then the ship will often be rotated closer to the eventual dry dock.

 

Perhaps the Inspirations water works were needed more on the Mexican riveria as opposed to the W carribean?

 

It also allows for Panama canal cruises which actually serve a purpose.

He specifically mentions the Inspiration/Paradise switch and how it was done to save on fuel costs. The Paradise has Azipods, which the Inspiration does not... and that makes the Paradise cheaper to operate on itineraries that involve long distances. The Inspiration is more suitable for the Southern California circuit which involves very few miles.

I had suspected something similar, but I didn't know that the Azipods were really that much more fuel efficient. I'm glad to see a change of scenery though at the Port of Tampa. The Inspiration was one of the first ships I ever sailed on growing up, along with the Sensation when it was operating out of Tampa. I welcome the Paradise and it's extra pool at the back instead of the waterworks. Hopefully I'll be sailing on her next fall if the price is right.

That being the case why is the Legend still in Tampa ?

Well, the Legend has Azipods along with all the Spirit class ships. Also there is the bigger issue of that pesky Sunshine Skyway bridge into Tampa Bay that the Fantasy and Spirit class ships can squeeze under, but not the bigger ships. They've had no problems keeping the Legend full, and I think it's a good match for the port even though it repeats the same itinerary over and over. Both the Paradise and the Legend will hopefully continue to serve lots of happy passengers from the Port of Tampa for years to come.

 

Also when you think about it, the run from Cozumel back to Tampa has to be done at a pretty good pace. There's 500 nmi or so between the two, so the efficiency factor is a big deal.

The Paradise will arrive in Tampa on December 12th and the Inspiration will arrive in Long Beach on December 17th.

 

 

We are taking the Paradise on that Dec 12 trip, should be interesting as it will be coming off that long Panama Canal trip.

There is one other good reason for the swap, I have always wanted a 14-day repo cruise with only a single outbound flight.. Bring it on, can't wait.

I'm really excited about the switch. I am going on Paradise this August and then over Christmas weekend we will be on the Inspiration. It will be nice to have a change. From those of you who have been on Inspiration how is the decor different?
