It's not gonna be real accurate, this count... I do not smoke, but, there are 11 of us traveling together, 10 non smokers, 1 smoker. I only tallied 1 vote for non smoking so the other 9 plus the one smoker aren't being considered.

This poll won't be accurate for this reason.

 

Another issue; say the ship has 3,000 passengers. Approximately 1,000 are kids (0.5 kid per adult). That leaves 2,000 adults. If 20% are smokers (matching the national average), that equates to 400 smokers. So the overall percentage as measured by total passengers is 400/3000 or 13%.

 

I would bet the ratio of kids to adults is higher which would drive the percentage even lower.

The only thing I dislike about the smoking policies is not the restrictions themselves, but rather Carnival citing statistics that say that 90% of their cruisers are non-smokers, conversely only 10% are smokers. Their survey was obviously flawed....they are off by a significant amount according to US and worldwide statistics. Now the "lunatic fringe" of non-smokers are running amok saying only 10% of cruisers are smokers, so you really don't count....away with you. Unfortunately Carnival has now armed the idiots.

That reminds me........we just got back from staying a week in Mexico and I actually made a comment that I barely saw any Mexican locals smoking......we were just talking about this the other day...

When we were in Dominican this winter many of the locals did not smoke either. Talking to the bartender there, she said they don't - not good for you and too expensive.

My wife smokes and I don't but we think the rules strike about as good a balance as one could get based on how difficult this issue is. We are balcony cruisers and she never smokes in the room. We like it that smokers can sit at the casino bar.

One of the reasons I quit smoking is that cigarettes had gone up to $5.00 for a carton and I refused to pay that kind of ridiculous money to smoke.:rolleyes:

Let's say, for the sake of argument, that a pack of Marlboro Reds (which was my brand) averages $4.00 a pack. I was smoking about a carton and a half a week, so that would be $60.00 a week. That would be $3120 a year, which for a single person is about three 7-day cruises a year.

I don't think that 10% is unrealistic. I know that fewer than 10% of the adults I know where I live here in Maryland smoke (really, we don't have a single smoker in my office of 47 people), however if I went to Pennsylvania where I'm from the number is probably closer to the 20% national average. I'm sure there are geographical differences.

 

Exactly. There are some states where you will have more than 20% of the population smoke (Southern, NE and in general states with more poverty) and other states where probably 10% or less of the population smokes (think Oregon, Colorado..."healthier" lifestyle states).

I think that Walmart shoppers comprise a larger percentage of the smoking population, and thus I know that Carnival's numbers are way wrong. :p

Is it possible that their poll is flawed because alot of smokers don't smoke in their cabins, so they classified them as Non-smokers?

I think the 10% number for smokers on Carnival ships is wrong, also. If you read cruise reviews, Carnival more than other cruise lines has comments about too much smoking and smoke in public areas on the ships. I know that people smoke on all cruise lines, but people bothered to comment on this in their reviews. I don't smoke, and I would put the percentage of people smoking on the Carnival Miracle, that I was on twice, at 30%.

 

We would walk up one deck and down again to avoid walking through densely smokey public areas. I am happy to see the changes. I also think it is fair that smokers still have areas to smoke in, just fewer than before.

 

I think we are seeing a trend, though.

I do too! Here's why....if only 10% of cruisers were smoking, then the majority of people wouldn't be bothered at all by smokers. However, in this and other threads we've heard constant barrages of "my cruise was destroyed by the inconsiderate smokers who (fill in the blank)." By the way, I am a lifetime non-smoker married to a smoker. We get a balcony cabin because hubby smokes there (just as he smokes outside at home). Wish the OP had given an option to vote "I don't but my spouse does" or vice versa.

So according to CCL, 90% of their passengers don't smoke. That number seems awfully high to me! The American Heart Association puts the number of smokers at just about 20% in the United States in general.

 

Since there have been posts about the unscientific research that CCL has done to come up with that number I thought I would just add one more unscientific way to get information.

FYI : this board has always been very "pro smoking"....a place for smokers to congratulate themselves. This is not just unscientific, it is ridiculous

 

20% No....California is only 13 %, Florida is about 17%....but then the stats are upped by "smoker" states.....usually the poorest, most unhealthy states around. West Virginia has virtually NO smoking laws....28% of the population smokes....very poor and unhealthy state....how many people (besides PM and his lovely family) are cruising from there?? Not many that I see on here

 

Mississippi is another "smoker" state....Kentucky....and so on....poorest states have the most smokers. They probably are not cruising

I voted "no" in the poll since I switched to e-cigs over 2 years ago and haven't had a cigarette since. But I smoked for 41 years. I'm still for smoker's rights tho' and hate to see our rights taken away one at a time.

 

For now it's easy to judge smokers harshly for that "nasty, disgusting habit" and so Carnival has done the smart thing and banned smoking in cabins. That should be good enough but the non-smokers are clammering for a ban of smoking on balconies because smokers will be polluting their air. Give me a break!....as a reformed smoker I'm highly sensitive to cig smoke now but you can barely catch a whiff if someone is smoking on their balcony. I guarantee it's in no way polluting the air you're breathing as the ship sails along at 24 knots...get real!

 

I'm thinking cruise prices for balconies will be on the rise since smokers will be snatching them up.....I've learned to be careful what I wish for.

 

Anyway, if people can just manage to be considerate of their fellow man we can all get along....truly, we can :D

I'm sure Carnival Corporation didn't conduct a quick poll of 10% of their cruise population and then pass sweeping changes on three of their cruise lines. Saying your poll is 'unscientific' is accurate. Imagine Bill O'Reilly having a poll on his show asking how many Tea Party members love or hate Sarah Palin. I am sure there are tens of thousand of people who may have cruised Carnival only a hand full of times, maybe even once, and then went back to their cruise line of 'non-smoking' preference. Their voices aren't heard in this poll of yours. They may have left Carnival because of the old smoking policy and may now return because of the change.

While the number seems high, it could be close to accurate.. If you believe the AHA number of 80% and factor in the amount of kids onboard 85-90% might be accurate.

 

Now the issue that people from outside the US cruise with carnival might skew those numbers..

 

You've also got to remember that the online cruising population is also a significantly different demographic than the total population. You won't get, for example, many 85 year olds on cruisecritic to vote in this poll.

Those who cruise are generally in the mid-upper levels of financial prosperity and education as opposed to the rest of the country. The fact is: the more educated a person is, and the more money they have, the less likely they are to smoke. That doesn't mean rich people don't smoke..

 

Well, the reality is that Carnival targets people at the lower end of that level of financial prosperity, so based on what you said, it wouldn't be surprising if there are more smokers on a Carnival cruise than on any other cruise line.
