Cig. Smoking problems QM2?

Psychedout

Unless you choose to sit in Churchills i doubt if you will notice the smokers.

Occasionally i did get a slight whiff of cig smoke on cabin decks by the lifts:confused: go figure i dont know why??

They do allow smoking in G32 on the upper level but again it is not overpowering at all.

I have never had a problem in cabin or on balcony but maybe i was just lucky

Just off QM2 and smoke was never a problem. There was one area on one of the back pools that is sorta sectioned off for smokers but if you avoid that one pool it's not an issue. We had an outside window room and found no evidence of previous smokers and that is unusual as I am very sensitive and can usually pick it up if it is a problem.

Psychedout, sorry to hear your friends decided not to sail with you on the July 1 2012 QM2 beacuse of negative feedback regarding cig smoke. Where did they get that negative feedback?

My husband stopped smoking cigs 14 years ago, and he can smell a cig from a distance - however, he has never complained about cig smoke on QM2. Oddly enough, we are both bothered by perfume which proliferates the "Sale on Perfume" tables, and then we just avoid that area.:)

On the July 2011 cruise, once late at night we thought we detected a vague cigar odor while walking on the open deck (it didn't bother us, we were just amazed that there was any scent at all on the open deck - most of the time the only scent is salt sea air!) Anyway, it's a big ship, and there's room enough for everyone to live and let live ;)

Cheers,

Salacia

My daughter and I sailed a TA in May 2009 in a QG. The cigarette smoke from the suite next door was horrible. Maintenance came and adjusted the ventilation system, but it was still very noticeable. Hopefully, they have fixed the problem since then

I smoke but believe Cunard should outlaw it inside staterooms. I would never, ever smoke inside a stateroom.

If I fancy a cigarette, then I go to a designated place on the ship. Simple really.

It does really bug me though if I am in a designated area and someone expresses their opinion about the smoke. Again, simple, just avoid the smoking areas if you don't want to smell smoke.

I was on the QM2 recently and there was a pretty strong smell of cigarette smoke when walking past staterooms. I certainly don't agree with that.

I wonder how many of us that do smoke, do so in their own bedrooms at home? Not many at all I doubt. If you don't, then why is it necessary to smoke in a stateroom?

The other subject is the balcony. Should you be allowed to smoke on the balcony? Why not if you are considerate.

Rosler, I agree with every word: I don't smoke in the cabin and once you start banning it on balconies, you are moving away from the health argument and onto the "don't like it" argument, which opens up a couple of things that I find uncongenial and another million or so that others find irksome...

Just to add that a decent indoor area would be most welcome, particularly for when the decks are closed off.

there are seveal shiplines that inforce the no smoking in staterooms but still on balconies.

I say divide the staterooms in half and only allow smoking on one ship side of the staterooms.

This would create more early bookings as the non-smokers and smokers would want to book the room they want. Non-smokers are happy they can go out on their balconies and not be blasted with 2nd hand smoke and smokers would be happy because they would be able to bum a cig. off their next door neighbor. QM2 should be a classy enough of a ship to lead the way.

I was told they got the feedback from people they know who have sailed on the QM2 several times and on the CC Board. We have sailed Princess 4 times so far and never had a problems with Cig. smoke except in the Casino. My wife never smoked and I quit 35 years ago.

Cunard just came out with a new smoking policy for next year starting in April on the QM2.

Thanks for the feedback.

The new policy is

No smoking in ANY public area except Churchills (Cigars only), parts off the open deck and on private balconies this starts from march /April 2012 .

Cunard has put this in place from comments on CC and from comment cards on board the ships.

On QM2 smoking is also banned from the upper floor of G32 .

There is due soon another change in smoking laws in the UK as well, not sure when this will be but will be in line with the new smoking laws in New York

Fir me, I agree with you less is good, but for the smokers, well if they still travel on Cunard it will be harder, I agree with room for them though, I never used the casino much due to the smoke, now I do use it every evening.

I ecpect some nice cigar smokers will allow a few cigarette smokers in there mind you, although some are agaisnt it.

On transatlantic cruise in 2009 we had smoker next door. Our in hull balcony was not usable for most of the trip due to severe smoke issues...even opening door for fresh air was a problem because of lingering smoke. Smoking from inside that next door cabin also made travel in hallway unpleasant outside our room. Indeed, it was a big problem. glad to hear that in cabin smoking will end in early 2012, but verandah smoking will still be a problem. Nice to have non smoking casino, though.

Did you have an adjoining door? If not, I'm not clear how you it migrated from the cabin next door.

Mary

There was no adjoining door. As I mentioned, it had something to do with the ventilation sysem, to the best of my knowledge. This is what was told to me by our butler. I noticed a maintenance worker was working on a panel on in the hallway. The smoke was also very noticeable in the hallway. On our April TA sailing we had no problems.

Does anyone really use their balcony enough on a transatlantic to either smoke or smell it:rolleyes: You must be more hardy than I! The wind was whipping around soooo much someone could have been smoking a huge Havana and I wouldn't have noticed.

Julie were you able to see the fireworks in Boston from the Ship?

Thanks,

Hugh

Yes there were a lot of high fireworks seen from the 12th and 13th deck. You could hear them but they were a little distance away but still enjoyable and without the crowds. They started at 10 30 and i must say i didnt notice the time at the end but it was sufficient.

It was a lovely atmosphere onboard and an excellent trip:D

Lucky for me the smell is not too bad, I also avoid the area or move through fast, I just wish they contain the tables etc somewhere else, maybe down in those conference rooms:)

Having returned recently from a transatlantic crossing on QM2 as part of a group of six (five non-smokers including myself) I was interested to note the current smoking policy.

The ONLY place that I noticed the smell of stale cigarette smoke was in G32.

Churchills had the wonderful aroma of cigars and pipes.

There was no smell at the smoking area at the rear of the Deck 7 promenade, nor at the three "smoking" tables near the Deck 8 pool.

The remainder of the ship was stale cigarette smoke free, as far as I could tell.

The casino was much less busy than I had noticed on previous voyages, and has been noted elsewhere, the bar there seemed to be doing little or no business.

I spent parts of many evenings in the starboard wing of the Commodore Club where I could clearly see into Churchills. At no time did the room get so crowded that there were no seats available for smokers.

As I walked around the Deck 7 promenade I never saw more than 5 or 6 smokers together at the rear smoking area, usually only one or two.

Every time I visited, there were always seats available at the three "smoking" tables on Deck 8, near the pool. This undercover (yet outdoors) area is accessible even when the promenade is being buffeted by high winds by using the interior stairs from the rear of the Kings Court. Even when it is raining, smokers are protected from the elements.

Given the number of smokers I saw on that voyage, I would say that Cunard have got the provision of smoking areas about right and that the potential problem of stale smoke, wasn't an issue.

You will have a wonderful, Julie can you past a photo or two.and fireworks are far better quality than quantity. Imagine the only smoke was from fireworks in the distance:).

My B2B is coming round in just 98 , but I have QE for 2 weeks before that, no fireworks though that I know off, but the company of many good friends
