Getting from the Baltic docks into town

We're on the August 9 sailing of the Emerald Princess, and I've noticed that most of our docks are slightly out of town. With a short time in each port, I'd rather save the time than the money, and am willing to splurge on taxis to get our family of four into town in a hurry, rather than figure out a number of bus systems. Are taxis plentiful at the docks? Or does Princess provide shuttles in some of the cities?

Hi, Your ship berths in Warnemünde (a suburb of Rostock) at Pier 8, literally alongside the railway line and from the dock gate to the centre of the little town is a 10 min walk through the railway station. To get into Rostock city centre the trains depart every 15 mins and arrive Rostock Central station about 20 mins later. From the tram stop on the lower level of Central station a #5 or #6 will take you into the city centre. Whole trip takes about 35mins. Cost - either 1.70 euros (train +tram) each way or 13.50 for a group day ticket (all trains, trams, buses and cross-river ferries in the area all day). Taxi takes about 20 - 30 mins and costs 20-30 euros depending on the traffic.

The ports I'm most interested in are Stockholm, Helsinki and Oslo. In the other ports, either we're doing a tour or I think I can figure it out on my own.

Hydromom, I haven't found one website that tells me all of the docks, but I've found them on individual port websites. I didn't keep all the addresses, but I know Stockholm was listed at:

I know that in some cases they switch at the last minute, but hopefully most will be accurate. If you're cruising with Princess, I can let you know what I've found out for myself.

Helsinki- We used the shuttle here; quick and efficient.

 

Stockholm - We had a very limited time here so took a ship tour, but there were several options at the port - buses, ferries, etc.

 

There were also shuttles in Aarhus and Talinn.

 

I don't remember whether or not there were taxis at every port. We had an excellent port lecturer, John Lawrence, who was a wealth of knowledge about getting around.

Do you know whether you will be docking in Stockholm itself? Some cruise ships dock at Nynashamn, which is about an hour away.

It looks like we're docking at Statsgarden in Stockholm, according to the website I saw, although I understand the docks occasionally change at the last minute.

Yes, his talks are listed in the Patter; they are repeated on TV; he has desk hours near the Excursion Desk; he's very accessible. He was a cruise director for Princess for years, and the Baltic is his specialty. He had been on board Emerald June/July so hopefully he will still be there!

Oslo is walking distance, as is Tallinn.

 

Helsinki, there are three possible routes to walk, but they range from 2 1/2 - 3 miles. There is a Princess shuttle, don't remember how much (maybe $5 each way, $10 round trip) - they took Euros and dollars, but we took the #16 bus to the market. I bought an all day transportation card from the bus driver for 7 Euros - the drivers will change up to a 20 Euro bill, you don't have to have exact change - and used this transportation card for the bus, the tram, and the ferry - definitely saved money. There were also taxis available near the shuttle buses.

 

Stockholm we did a ship tour in the morning and felt we didn't have enough time to do anything else since we left at 2 PM. There were shuttles available, though, I think they might have been $20 round trip.

This is what I have read here, but we docked there and it was not nearly that long. We took a HOHO bus there that took us straight to the Vasa so we could miss the crowds :D then we could do the full tour thereafter.

We used HOHO buses in fact in all the ports that were not walkable. (Oslo is walkable but if you want to get to Viking Ship/Vigeland Park you need transport)

 

Up to you really if you are trying to save money, HOHO is more expensive than public transport everywhere but so much easier, the people will speak english and generally take USD/EUR or cc, plus you get the "tour guide" spiel over the headphones.

Not wanting to hijack the thread, but I have scoured the threads with links to which ship docks where, and my small 116 passenger ship isn't even listed. I'm on the Island Sky (Noble Calendonia) and start the Baltic 14 day cruise in Stockholm on 9th August, and then to Helskinki, St Petersburg, Riga, Tallin, Gdansk, Copenhagen (think I missed a couple!)

 

If this ship isn't mentioned anywhere on the usual dock lists, can I assume as they go further into the ports being smaller, I won't be able to find out where it is docking? I mean as it's small, does this mean the locations are more flexible and subject to change so arent' published?

In Helsinki you will arrive to Makasiini Terminal. It is on the centre about 200 metres from market square.

we didn't go into town in Stockholm, but I'm pretty sure I remember they announced the shuttles were $10 each way. We took a water excursion from Princess, so didn't even see if there were taxis, but the Princess paper states that taxis are available - no pricesw mentioned.

You couldn't do better than that! Just walk off the ship, go through the indoor market and end up at the outdoor market place. It is a pleasant stroll along the waterfront. To see what it is like, just plug in /Finland.html at the end of the web site listed below.

This is another reason why smaller ships have an advantage. The same happened for us in St. Petersburg.

Our shuttle in Stockholm from the ship was $6.00pp one way this was the usual amt give or take a dollar or two in all our Baltic ports..Most we could even use our SeaPass card to pay for them as we boarded the shuttlebus..
