new seekers Posted September 20, 2011 #1 Share Posted September 20, 2011 Jewel ots 14 night,England, france, ireland, iceland, newfoundland, boston. The food on this transatlantic was a notch above normal,we had very rough seas in the english channel as forcast by the bbc 5 days previous, which i love. We went to le harve, cherbourg, cobh, dublin, reykevik,st johns and boston. Iceland was so good it had everythink, sunny blue skys. Some friends asked us to share a car 32 euros each and we did the golden circle and the blue lagoon all in one day, there were fields with horses in lava fields, steaming ground, geysers ,well just wounderfull, then when we sailed out we were in the vortex night club at the top of the ship at 11.00pm and a officer called us outside to see the northern lights which just makes you think how beautiful our planet is,then the captain turned the ships out side lights off and we saw green slow moving curtains all around. It was the talk of the night as we sat at the revolving bar in the vortex. At cherbourg we went to la cite de la mer and went inside a nuclear sub. St johns in newfoundland had it warmest day in september in 20 years,it seemed the good weather had followed us from iceland. Amazingly there were only 74 brits on board, and we all had a letter telling us we would be getting a galley tour and speacial english tea party, the latter was held in the portofino with piano . of course we were told not to tell anyone untill we got off the ship. After doing so many caribbean cruises this was a nice change of pace, and i would highly recommend this cruise..................

Halesowen, so not far away! Did you fly straight back from boston or spend a few days there? Also, what did you think of the Jewel? We've done the Brilliance twice and really enjoyed that

negc Posted September 20, 2011 #8 Share Posted September 20, 2011 Wow, that sounds so cool. I will have to try that run one day. You will probably have to book it as soon as the books open. Next year's TA on the Jewel is already sold out so unless there are some cancellations it might not be possible to do it in 2012. Check out the thread for next year's cruise and see how active it is. This was a fantastic cruise and we were among the very few who missed the Northern Lights much to our regret. Otherwise the cruise, especially the ports of call, were wonderful and the Captain (Captain James) and the crew were terrific. Smoothest crossing we can ever recall.:)

heatherb1958 Posted September 20, 2011 #10 Share Posted September 20, 2011 I wanted to book this cruise but other things got in the way:(. Next year the Brilliance is doing a similar run from Copenhagen to New jersey which we have booked, it goes to Iceland so fingers crossed we get to see the Northern lights :) That was a really nice touch the ship did providing the afternoon tea for the British contingent onboard:)

new seekers Posted September 20, 2011 Author #12 Share Posted September 20, 2011 What did you do in St. John's? We will be there next September on the Brilllance. Thanks.:) We walked around the shops for a couple of hours, then went and had a beer or 4 sat outside in the sun and eat fish and chips. Its a beautiful natural port with a narrow entrance and would be easy to defend, when we left the harbour at the narrow entrance we sounded the horn 3 times and the people at the light house let off 3 cannon blasts. negc Posted September 20, 2011 #13 Share Posted September 20, 2011 What did you do in St. John's? We will be there next September on the Brilllance. Thanks.:) Six of us simply hired a taxi outside the pier and for $50 an hour (US or CDN) we went to Signal Hill, the Quidi Vidi community, toured downtown St. John's, visited Cape Spear (the easternmost point in North America)and had lunch in a restaurant in the downtown just a block or so up from where the ship docks. If you have time you might want to visit the Rooms which overlooks the harbor and has some very interesting exhibits. Our tour cost $125 split among the three couples. Our taxi driver/guide was so good each couple threw in $50 which still seemed a bargain. Weather was warm and sunny except at Cape Spear where it was quite foggy and a bit chilly.:) As we sailed away through the narrow channel leading out to the ocean, the islanders saluted us with three blasts from a cannon set high up on Signal Hill.:)
Rala Posted September 20, 2011 #14 Share Posted September 20, 2011 What did you do in St. John's? We will be there next September on the Brilllance. Thanks.:) We walked around on our own. Had a lovely free tour of St. John the Baptist Anglican Cathedral and got to hear the organist play the 3,700 pipe organ...gave me goosebumps. Also, another free mini tour of the courthouse and had our pic taken with one of the judges in full robes...very interesting. Have to say the people of Newfoundland were some of the friendliest and most helpful we have ever encountered in our travels. The area around the port where we were is Veeeeerrry hilly, so wear comfy walking shoes...your quads and hamstrings will get a workout !!! :D
