Hi

Deck 5 is the best on the ship turn right out of the suite and walk straight to the bar super---- we are on 6 this time but it does not really matter Shadow will be great.

Finished packing now and will be leaving this day week for Hong Kong for 3127 & 3128. Really looking forward to 5 weeks off work.

We had 501 on our first cruise aboard the Shadow. Another advantage is that anyone smoking on their balcony won't bother you because you are the first balcony.

It was a relatively calm trans-Atlantic but I felt the ocean there. The ceiling creaked a lot too.

Deck 5 is pretty well the best deck to be on.

We are now Vista customers because those cabins are lower and further aft. But mainly because for every 4 cruises in a Vista, we get a free 5th compared to buying only Veranda suites. But deck 4 isn't as convenient as deck 5 (except on the Spirit where the dining room has a public back entrance so we didn't have to go up and down to get to dinner.

The dining room is located in deck 4 on both Cloud and Wind -- and deck 4 is very convenient in that The Bar is one deck up. I always get a Vista suite because there is so much open public space that paying the additional for a small veranda does not seem cost effective for me.

Joe_90, I'll be on 3127 with you, traveling on deck 7. After all I've read here, I hope I haven't made a mistake by not booking deck 5!

We'll be starting with several days in Tokyo, before flying to Hong Kong on Tuesday night to meet the ship on Wednesday. Look forward to meeting you on board. Any chance you're staying at The Peninsula in Hong Kong? We'll be there Tuesday night.

They finally assigned us a cabin, 502 on the Silver Shadow, a Veranda Suite. Anyone been in that cabin and if so, did you like it. We are on voyage 3128, Singapore/ Songapore. The cabin is last one on bow.

My husband and I were assigned 502 (Shadow) on a 10 Alaska cruise last year. I have to say we felt and heard the waves hitting the bow most of the time, especially when heading to San Francisco in heavy seas. Also, the balcony is slightly smaller. There is a cabin next to it, not on the deck plan, that was occupied by crew. It sometimes got quite noisy in the evening with doors slamming. We tried to change cabins but the ship was sold out. Overall, it wasn't that bad but if I had a choice of another cabin, I would take it.

I'm pleased to report I have 533 on my next trip on the Shadow. Deck 5 is a great location and this time I wanted to experience a terrace suite.

Can I put my chair outside and at least sit down on the terrace? Has anyone done this before?

Cheers

Jennifer

We have had terrace suites on several occasions and like them a lot. Yes, the terrace is less private, but it also affords better views in both directions. You are not supposed to put any chairs on the terrace because it is the emergency exit for a number of cabins. We found that so long as we were occupying the chair, it was perfectly all right to be sitting outside.

You will have immediate access to the casino bar which is our favorite.

I don't mean to hijack the thread but intrigued by this statement.

Is it the case that Silversea provides a complimentary fifth cruise once someone has sailed four times previously?

I think I've read it wrong so would be grateful if someone could explain?

There are discounts for repeat sailors 'Venetians' but the comment refers to the lower price charged for vista suites which after 4 lower cost cruises leaves a balance to pay for a fifth. ;)

Well I certainly do not want to hijack either but the "assigned" confused me..Our TA told us to choose the deck and number, so we've been staring at at brochure layout of all the decks all week!!!! In the end does SS just ASSIGN a suite...

I am new at this so rather confused. I have to think at these prices you get to choose from what is available, right? Ta said 6 was mid, 9 the top, and they'd choose either...

Is there a thread on choosing the best location???

Oh me, time to open some wine:D

Deck 5 is the most desirable deck from what we can tell. Cabin 502, however, is too far towards the bow. If choices are still available, choose a cabin as close to the "midship verandah" (5% higher fare) section as you can find!

A terrace suite is a good compromise if you are not too concerned with privacy. (Being mature, gentle people, no other passenger is going to stand outside your cabin on the shared balcony and peep in, but expect other people on the shared balcony during port entry and exit).

Its fare is 10% more than a vista suite (no balcony), used to be classified a vista suite before 2008. It actually has a more panoramic view than a regular verandah suite (sans the in-between suite partitions) and in that sense is very desirable. Other than the balcony partitions, it is identical to the midship verandah suite right across the central walk-way, which would cost a whopping 17% more. In fact, cabin 533 is central in location, right next to the shops and lobby, but for the two handicap cabins 535 and 537.

As for furniture on the shared balcony, sorry, no. The crew has to pass through that shared balcony during emergency drills. While you may put a chair outside just to sit on it for short durations, it cannot be left outside, and they will not serve your breakfast outside.
