We are booked on American airline flight from Munich to Singapore via Johasnesburg and return from Singapore to Montreal... (Oceanis cruise Dec. 22, 2011)

All the reviews of AA are negative:( lost luggage, flight delays, dirty airplane.... does anyone have a positive comment about this airline? !!!It,s got me worried... wish we were on Singapore airline for our return flight....

You are correct... we are flying Lufthansa from Montreal, munich, Capetown... it is the return flight that seems to be with AA.....

From SIN it could be on Japan air or Cathy to the USA check the codeshare partner..it probably will not be on AA metal from SIN

a little later in the game but you could have requested the flight you wanted & pay the deviation fee ...possibly an upcharge but you would get the carrier of your choice

Thanks Lyn, I checked the codeshare partner and our flight (after deviation) is AA 5837 from Singapore to Narita which is Japan airline ..(Thank goodness ) however, our flight from Narita to New York is AA0168 which unfortunately is really American airline....!!! Thanks for the quick response,

We flew AA last December/January Miami to Rio and then BA to Miami..had uneventful flights -- the plane took off, flew and landed early -- and the seats were relatively comfortable...you also could have taken British Airways from Singapore and then on to Montreal. That's what we're doing from Singapore...actually it is Qantas (code share with AA). We opted for the air deviation and it only cost us the admin fee with no additional charge for the different flights. Arlene;)

Oh too bad

You could have maybe gotten Quantas/BA connecting in LHR rather that a USA hub

You may already know this ...when requesting a deviation you do not have to take the first flights offered ;)

Shop around before so you know what routes you will like & see if Oceania can do the flights you want or if there is an extra fee

enjoy the cruise looks like a good one

When booking our Marina cruise for May 2012, rather then pay the $125/pp air deviation to have some imput into our flights ( are flying into Athens a few days ahead of our cruise)....... We had O back the supposed "free air" included in our cruise package out of the package. O gave us back $1275/pp from cost of cruise package and we just booked our airfare on our own with the flights we wanted, airlines we wanted etc. Got good flights for $1225/pp. So we saved money on our flight and did not have to pay the air deviation fee either. :)

Yes, and sometimes the air is just too great not to take advantage of the air deviation. When we flew to South America, we got non-stop flights for an additional $100 each on the air fare...the best I could do was $500 more per person for a non stop. Yet, last April we flew to Dubai on Delta non stop from Atlanta for less than what Oceania would have charged us. The best and only thing to do is check out air fare, check out the air deviation and see what works best. Arlene

Our last O cruise ended in Singapore (Jan 2011) and we used O's air. Our flight(s) were Cathay Pacific to Hong Kong. There we boarded another Cathay Pacific which flew direct, non-stop to Toronto. This was the end of of flying. Is it possible that you could do this and then get a flight from Toronto to Montreal? I know there are many flights between Toronto and Montreal. Just a thought ...

Thanks for the info, unfortunately, we have accepted the deviation from Singapore... wish we could have asked for a flight with Cathay. direct to Toronto... via Hong Kong... which is a great airport....

as I am a neophyte at this kind of thing! I am learning....

Last year we flew AA from LAX to Narita in business class. Flight was on time, seats are the same as biz to Europe, plane was clean, service was good. We continued on JAL from Narita to Hanoi, also in biz. Seats not as comfortable and food is geared to Japanese customers. Luggage arrived in Hanoi with us. Try not to worry too much about your AA leg.

I'll take AA over Delta anytime. We flew AA to and Delta home from our last cruise. The flight over was fine, but on the way home Delta managed to lose both our bags (my husband's and mine) and about 30 other people's on the same flight! I'm certainly glad I flew Delta going HOME, not to the cruise!

To add insult, after paying $25 each for two bags which did not arrive with us, we were given a $25 (total) discount on a future Delta trip. At the same time we were filing our claim, I heard the Delta clerk ask a woman we had talked to in line, who was travelling by car another 200 miles to her destination, if she could come back to the airport to pick up her luggage when it arrived, because of the difficulty getting it to her so far away!!! (which teaches us that no matter how bad our situation, others are often much worse off!)

Our bags did both arrive the next day, but I won't be flying Delta again any time soon.

Does anyone know if we have to go through US customs and security if we have a stop over ( connecting flights)on US soil during our flight.. ex Narita, New York then Montreal? also does AA have a baggage fee?ex $25 per bag...

When travelling from Montreal to Munich, then Johanesburg and finally to Capetown... do we have to go through immigration in Munich and again in Johanesburg???

Yes, the US does not have transit areas so on your first stop in the US you will go thru Immigration, pick up your suitcases, go thru customs and then recheck you baggage to Montreal. You then have to go thru security as if you had just driven up to the airport. You don't go thru immigration leaving the US.

With American Airlines in the news the past 2 days about their financial problems and the probability of a major restructuring, (there's even been speculation of bankruptcy) I wouldn't want to hold an AA ticket for too far in the future. You'll be fine, though, if you're traveling in December. My own experience with them has been mixed.

My husband and I are both million milers on American. We've always had good experiences with them for us and our luggage. As priority members, we do get to board first in coach, check bags for no charge and pick our seats, almost always in the exit rows. We are very satisfied. On a recent flight layover in Dallas, there was a four hour delay -- due to a computer problem. They worked very hard to get it corrected. In the end, the aircraft was changed. They had to bring it in from somewhere else, rather than keep us overnight.

For our inconvenience, we each received five thousand miles for our frequent flyer account. Delta, on the other hand, I've heard from friends, loses luggage frequently, has significant delays, etc. It just all depend on how you hit it. We use carryon luggage almost exclusively on the outbound flights and on our returns we always check the bags using a folding bag for clothes and putting souvenirs, even wine, in our checked lugggage.

On our most recent flight, our plane carried a war hero, a young man of 23 years of age, killed in Afghanistan and being returned to his famiily waiting on the tarmac in Los Angeles. I would like to say American Airlines carried out this operation with tremendous respect and deference and advised and informed the passengers both on the departure and upon the arrival of what was transpiring. A very large corps of volunteers from the airline/airport met the soldier. It was all very moving and American did a great job. They also had two uniformed escorts for our hero seated in first class. I don't think they make the government pay for those seats. I would tend to think not. Yes, Singapore Airlines and Quantas are terrific. We've used them too, but I wouldn't worry too much.

Worth the deviation fee just to avoid routing through the States ..... to get to/from Canada. Too too much hassle.

We always pay the deviation fee as we like to arrive at least a day prior to embarkation to deal with jet lag & more importantly ensure we have luggage. We also prefer to select the airline(s) ( esp.Star Alliance to get our points) & preferred routing, and if in Europe, like to spend a couple of extra days visiting with family.

I only wish O would offer business class upgrades at a REASONABLE cost.
