Harrahs Casino New Orleans....

I haven't eaten there, but pass it all the time. It doesn't look very impressive: plastic glasses, etc. Kind of like a Picadilly Cafeteria.

Unless you just want to see how much you can eat for the money, walk down to Mulate's at the corner of Convention Center Boulevard and Julia Street. Better food for the price, and there is usually live entertainment.

Someone talked me into having the buffet dinner at Harrah's once. ONLY once! No thank you. The food was ok, just nowhere near the quality of ANY of the other N.O. restaurants. Lucky Dog would have been a better choice! (BTW, I love Lucky Dogs - the only street vendor I would ever patronize.) All us locals eat Lucky Dogs.

Breakfast? I haven't been to Harrah's for b'fast. Mother's has a great breakfast, as does Emeril's NOLA restaurant. Then, there's always Brennans, if you can stand crowds and noise.

I have never been to a casino outside of Nevada. Are the casinos in NOLA on the scale of the Vegas casinos?

I find several differences between NOLA casinos and Las Vegas/Laughlin casinos.

The main one for me is the pay tables for video poker. In Louisiana, they are lousy - will remind you of cruise ship pay tables. I believe this is more because Louisiana limits the payout by law and less because of the casino greed. The overall feel isn't the same for me, also.

Harrah's is the only land based casino there, but there are a number of the "riverboat" style in locations scattered around the area.

Want a good home made breakfast with potatoes or grits, ham, bacon and eggs to order at an unbelieveable price? Try FredRicks on St. Charles Street, about 3 blocks north of Canal St. Also, they have an equally great lunch. It's a greasy spoon sort of joint, but great cookin'! Take the streetcar if you like.

I was wondering about the payouts for poker machines. Do they make up their own "house rules" for live blackjack games?

I know I said above that I had never been to a casino outside of Nevada, but after re-thinking that statement I find it is false (the mind is the second thing to go). I have been to Indian Casinos in California, and a couple of European Casinos. I can tell you, here in Sweden the "house rules" they make up for black jack are absolutley silly, and I refuse to play. Think of this, the HOUSE takes pushes!!! Can you imagine that? Talk about greed, enough said.

http://www.state.la.us/osr/lac/42v11/42v11.pdf

a maximum expected payback value for one credit shall not exceed 94 percent of the value of credit based on optimum operating play strategy...

The table blackjack is fine. Probably not much, if any different from Las Vegas these days. Maybe a little different double down rules, but overall not bad. They certainly don't steal pushes.

  • 3 weeks later...

We thought the Harrah's dinner buffet was good when we stayed across the street at the Hilton after our Grandeur cruise.

We eat at the Bellagio and the Mandalay Bay buffets when we're in Las Vegas, and Harrah's in NOLA isn't as nice, but it's a good dinner.

The dessert selections are very good, and the pralines are TO DIE FOR!!!

I'd get there early, because it's crowded on weekends.
