Smoking on balconies

It could be that the person you're referring to has considerable time built up with the cruise line that occurred in the days when smoking restrictions on all cruise lines were practically the same. To have them change at this point would be an insult.

But the cruiselines have tightened up considerably over the last couple of years. How did these people manage before those restrictions? They obviously accepted the situation and now decide to complain?

I can't speak for everyone but most people in the US have been complaining for years about the situation & only in the last 15 or 20 years has anything been done to correct the situation. Since cruise lines are not covered by local smoking laws they've waited until the last possible moment to do anything & that was only because they thought they would lose business. It will prove interesting to see how long it takes HAL to stop the smoking on balconies now that Celebrity & Princess have both done so.

I haven't been cruising in years and was thinking of taking the plunge again in 2012. Just received the HAL brochure which said "smoking is no longer permitted in cabins but is permitted on balconies". Eek, I can remember the last time that I was downwind of a smoker and I had to keep the door shut, it kind of negates the whole balcony experience. Is this a new policy? Can you smoke on balconies of other lines?

Yes, I had the same experience with second hand smoke while "enjoying" my balcony Nov 26, 2011 to Dec 4, 2011 on the Westerdam (aka Worsterdam). Any smoker will tell you "I have rights you know." People who smoke know not what they do.

Wow, you were lucky that your were on a ship that you could actually turn off your a/c and not just be able to change the temperature on the thermostat. We were on MSC a few years ago (worst cruise ever but that's another story) and like other lines, although not a written rule, it was asked of passengers to NOT leave balcony doors open. Maybe that has changed now or maybe you just didn't hear them ask that? MSC's non-smoking balcony policy is only for their North American routes though. Way too many smokers on their European routes, even for some smokers!

We were on the Magnifica and smoking was not allowed on balconies on a Med cruise, but in some bars. I did not see more smokers than on HAL or Celebrity.

We don't smoke and have never been bothered by neighbors who do.

We were on an Alaskan cruise and sat near two ladies for breakfast in the buffet area.

They were both complaining about the smoke on the balcony from smoking neighbors and the horrible smoke in the Casino. One went on and on about how she just simply cannot tolerate smoke as it makes her violently ill.

Our excursion was a tour and then lunch was a salmon bake.

These two were with us and I was highly amused to see the two of them standing near the bar b que as they waited to be served first for lunch. They were inhaling the smoke from the bar-b-que as they stood there. Nary a cough or a complaint.

Although the smoke from the bar-b-que might be bad for your health, it sure smells better. :p

I am trying to make an informed decision, that's why I posted. It was different when I was an agent & cruised every quarter, but this upcoming trip could be my only cruise in 5-10 years, since we opted for a vacation home, so I am being cautious.

Last time I cruised ac shut off when balcony door was open, so I didn't think too much about it, left it open at night when the ship was moving when it was comfortable. You are probably right about it being princess instead of celebrity with the fire.

We are just looking for an uncomplicated vacation for our first trip as empty nesters. Reading these boards is reminding me that maybe cruising isn't it. I thought maybe with the demo of the HAL cruiser smoking wouldn't be an issue, guess I was wrong. I also (flame warning) don't like gambling, but H does, so this means I'm most likely spending the hours after a late dinner reading in the cabin. This is also ruling out several Islands. I don't mind that H gambles, but it's kind of boring for me. Again, just trying to pick the best choice for us.

True that. The way these threads are going, next there will be a thread about sitting next to people in show lounges, who have bad body odor (LOL).

Have a nice day all!

Don't sit in your cabin, come to the Piano Bar. There's no smoking in there and it's a lot of fun! :D

Actually, I believe they do know. They book lines which allow them to smoke on their balconies and thus, pay the higher price to do so.
