Casino Slots - Real coins or cards only?

We've gotten used to the "coinless" machines mostly through our getaways to Vegas so that aspect wasn't a big issue on the Maasdam last March. That said we weren't particularly fond of having the balances transfer to a casino account connected to our card and like the Vegas receipts that print out when you leave a machine. I guess I can see why a ship casino wouldn't want to do that but we still prefer it.

Your gambling is now run by a computer tied to your card. It's like the grocery store or department store.

They say it's on sale and when you get to the check out you find out it rang up regular price and you didn't discover that until you got home . When I have that roll of quarters in my pocket I am in charge of what goes in and what comes out(or don't come out). When you use their card they are in charge and you have no control over what comes out. Not saying they are out to crook you, I'm just saying they are in charge of your money and when it's tied to your credit card it's the same as them having a blank check.

Actually, this method is only on Carnival-owned cruiselines. I was recently on Celebrity and their method is just like you describe ~ you get the "TITO" (ticket in, ticket out). I prefer that too. NCL uses the ticket print out also, I think.:)

Of course the major difference is that they don't have direct connection to your on board account, to the best of my knowledge it's totally separate, so you can't just keep playing and playing. In that sense it's not like a "credit card".

We haven't cruised Celebrity since 2005 so I didn't know that. Thanks. Of course we have no interest in cruising either Celebrity or NCL to the point where I've gotten Celebrity to stop sending me emails and regular mailings and we've never signed up for anything from NCL nor been on them. Maybe the HAL casino operator will go to TITO if they think they're not getting the action they'd like. I do know that on the Maasdam in March the slots were the least played that I've ever seen and I heard many complaining about having to set up the account. We'll be on Silversea this coming March and I have no idea how they handle slots but then again it's an extremely small casino on a ship with not quite 300 passengers.

I don't think they even make slot machines that take coins anymore.

Especially since the new "hot" machines are the pennies, can you imagine putting 30+ pennies into a machine??? or how many buckets you would need if you won anything substantial.:D

No coins.

Is that now true of the Amsterdam as well? When we took the Alaska cruise in 2010 on the Amsterdam I was flabbergasted that the slot machines still used coins (as well as bills) and tokens (quarter machines). I was used to ticket machines.

I spent a lot of time carrying buckets of coins to the cashier to exchange for currency whenever I won a large amount of coins.

When using coins you have no control of "what comes out" either. You could be shorted in either case. As far as "what goes in" you find that out each time you insert your card to start play, just as with coins.

How very kind of you - and would love to take you up on that - but regrettably - a large chunk of the "kid's inheritance" :) - went on our SVS - and there isnt much left for a repeat.

Meanwhile - for other like minded people ;) - here's a pic of my favourite stool at the sports bar - which I now use each day - to refresh my ageing memory ---- and please notice - the ashtrays:D
