peabody99 Posted January 23, 2012 #1 Share Posted January 23, 2012 This morning on the way to work I saw a large costa cruiseship in port. They do not sail the west coast of the US and I can't find anything about it? Anyone have any info?

Quasar1011 Posted January 23, 2012 #4 Share Posted January 23, 2012 I worked in the air traffic control tower at Lindbergh Field, San Diego from 2005-2008. When a cruise ship was in port, we could use it as our 4 mile weather visibility marker to the south. When out to sea, we used the downtown buildings instead. But I never heard of Costa sailing to San Diego either.
G.M.T. Posted January 23, 2012 #5 Share Posted January 23, 2012 This is Costa's first world cruise in about 20 years. Ron
Cushing985 Posted January 23, 2012 #6 Share Posted January 23, 2012 I saw that ship crossing the bridge this morning...kinda spooky. I looked at the Port of San Diego web page and a ship wasn't scheduled for today so I was a bit confused.

Hildegard47 Posted January 23, 2012 #8 Share Posted January 23, 2012 The ship is on a world cruise, but San Diego was not a scheduled stop. It was supposed to be in Cabo yesterday, and the next scheduled stop is Los Angeles tomorrow. I suppose they could have pulled into port in San Diego because of the weather. Or because the passengers have been nervous over the Costa ship that sank, or some combination. They first entered U.S. waters today, and I would wonder if the Coast Guard or the Carnival company pulled them in for an inspection. The news today is reporting that the cruise line itself may be under investigation, and Carnival (which owns Costa) has announced that it is reviewing policies. Also, given the finances of people who take world cruises, I wouldn't be surprised if they had passengers who wanted to be let off the ship as soon as it was back into U.S. waters. Lots of possible explanations, but that ship was not scheduled to stop here.
Hildegard47 Posted January 23, 2012 #9 Share Posted January 23, 2012 Costa Cruises has a page that shows the scheduled itinerary. They were in the Atlantic and then Central America and Mexico. Just entered U.S. waters probably today on their way to LA. http://www.costacruises.co.uk/B2C/GB/info/around-the-world-cruise.html
Rare ghstudio Posted January 24, 2012 #10 Share Posted January 24, 2012 I certainly hope that the coast guard does a very very thorough inspection of the ship before they allow it to depart.
