Jajone Posted January 28, 2012 #1 Share Posted January 28, 2012 Since we cruise a lot with the kids and don't want to pay to rent snorkel gear, we are considering buying some to bring with us. Where do I get decent gear for less than $30 and what should I be looking for?
kassimer1 Posted January 28, 2012 #2 Share Posted January 28, 2012 we got ours from sams club cant remember what it cost. i would get the dry snorkle= it has a valve on the end so if the end accidently goes under water it will close and wont fill with water. seashinesunshine Posted January 28, 2012 #3 Share Posted January 28, 2012 My son has the Sams club one also, the whole set was 20$ and they work great. You can also get some at Target, Walmart or any sporting goods store. The biggest thing is to make sure the mask fits well. I had used mine for a few years, then bought a new mask on St Thomas after a day of my mask not fitting well. It didn't cost me too much on the island, can't remember but it was under 30$. Matt&Carolyn Posted January 28, 2012 #4 Share Posted January 28, 2012 They have it at Costco now. :) It looks like a good price, but I didn't look that closely... ours are too young and still can't swim, so we won't need snorkle gear yet for a little while. ;)
Lady_Gamecock Posted January 28, 2012 #5 Share Posted January 28, 2012 I actually went to a dive shop here in Charleston and I got everything - fins, snorkel, mask, and bag for $70.00. That bag has saved us many, many times packing stuff for coming home! Just remember to ALWAYS hang up your wet gear to avoid dry rot!!
goofy810 Posted January 28, 2012 #6 Share Posted January 28, 2012 I would also get snorkel vests they run about $20 online amazon and are good safety gear and also some lines require them on there private island (I know royal does)
nw2this Posted January 28, 2012 #7 Share Posted January 28, 2012 Target, Walmart, Dick's, Sport's Authority, etc. http://www.walmart.com/ip/US-Divers-Java-Tonga-Rip-Jr.-Mask-Snorkel-and-Fins-Set/13029675
cruiserjt Posted January 29, 2012 #8 Share Posted January 29, 2012 Amazon has many choices and good quality. Buy something with different colors. Easier to spot when snorkeling with a group. All the rentals are the same color - I got my girls bright pink and blue ones - easy to see as we were floating around....
goldne Posted January 29, 2012 #9 Share Posted January 29, 2012 I think it's important if you can go to a dive shop to make sure that the mask fits. Fixing a leaky mask in the middle of the ocean is no fun at all! Especially for kids. The mask needs to stick to the face without the strap when you inhale in order to have the proper seal when youre in the water. Our kids both have a good quality mask and it makes the experience so enjoyable for them, they love snorkeling. Hope that helps!

Rare mitsugirly Posted February 11, 2012 #11 Share Posted February 11, 2012 I just bought new "sets" for my husband and I because I had the cheap Walmart type for the last 2 years and had problems with them leaking and fogging up. Water was always getting in the snorkel too and decided that it was time to invest in some "decent" gear. We purchased from Campmor and couldn't be happier. We absolutely love them and they fit great. :D
