Ozcruiser1 Posted February 7, 2012 #526 Share Posted February 7, 2012 I cannot understand why posters here want to act as judge, jury and executioner based on the sensational and sometimes inaccurate, reporting from the media. We can all speculate on guilt but it'd be wrong. Agree 100%. Lots and lots is pure speculation ...it may make for interesting points of view( and interesting reading) but its speculation. My good "table companion" Milaandra has ALWAYS tried to suppress the speculative hanging judge and jury by trying to encourage fellow posters to base their views on credible sources of information. For some Domnica Cemorton is seen as evil, for others, she is seen helpful, as they see Roberto Bosio( the 2nd captain). If we rely on media reports, to either form, reinforce or challenge our existing opinion we must hope that the media is accurate. I can only speculate that much of what we read in the media regarding this incident is speculative and thus what are we to think?
Milaandra Posted February 7, 2012 #527 Share Posted February 7, 2012 A fair sentence, upon conviction, might be one week in jail for each person on board. It wouldn't matter if they were injured, killed, or were evacuated without a scratch. 81 years?

Its all just informed, or uninformed, speculation, or gosip, or conjecture. That's all. We are not pretending to deal with facts, or evidence or to build a case of any kind. The care we need to take is to avoid any illegal use of the web or writing stuff that could be properly regarded as being offensive? Why do we do it ? You tell me, I can only answer for myself? I'm retired, I like to keep my mind active to keep dementia at bay, I enjoy the 'virtual' companionship and interactions with so many different people in very, many countries, I come from a seafaring environment and close relatives were sailors (me ony an occasional cruiser!) It keeps me away from whisky and wild, wild women, ........ occasionally! But, as you may have been able to tell by now, I don't take any of this stuff too seriously & I will be quite content for the 'real' proceedings to run their course! :)

I will say that looking at the lack of any white water around the bow, the ship was making this passage at a snails pace, not 15 knots. Do you know the circumstances? Milaandra Posted February 7, 2012 #533 Share Posted February 7, 2012 Why do we do it ? You tell me, For my part, I find the exchange of ideas, speculations and sources of information really interesting. I'm not all that interested in the civil lawsuits, but all other links I check out right away and I, too, enjoy the intellectual exercise involved with trying to make sense of the jigsaw puzzle. (actually, it's more like putting together a jigsaw puzzle when there are several mixed together in one box) And I live to provide information. :p I like to challenge the status quo, obviously. If we don't question, then it doesn't make for stimulating conversation anyway! I also feel that it is when defending our position that we become clearer about the thought processes that lead us to that point. I hope I never make anyone feel that they can't express themselves. shipfriend_max Posted February 7, 2012 #536 Share Posted February 7, 2012 Unless the blonde was standing right in front of him at the helmwith her baps out shaking them deliberately to distract him I see no reason to jail her. She was invited as a guest on to the bridge. I'm sure she's not the first cutie to ever grace Schettino's bridge (or any other Captain's) . I think there are more important problems than the blond, stupid girl. I think we have more to care about the pumping out of the fuel and the recovery after that... chrispb Posted February 7, 2012 #537 Share Posted February 7, 2012 and right wingers are stupid according to the Daily Mail. This must be one of the few accurate article they have included in the Snail http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2012/feb/05/daily-mail-calls-rightwingers-stupid?newsfeed=true Ha-ha, nobody is more right wing than Peter Hitchens who writes a column in the Mail On Sunday (I know some people who think he'd make a great Prime Minister). I think the Daily Mail has imported some of the staff from Nudes of the World - it has certainly gone downhill in recent months. SomeBeach Posted February 7, 2012 #539 Share Posted February 7, 2012 http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/italy/9066329/Costa-Concordia-Mystery-over-Captain-Francesco-Schettinos-lover-Domnica-Cemortan-deepens.html Couple of things to note from your link. The aunt of the dancer denies her neice was the Captain's "lover." Yet she does not deny that the luggage and personal items found in his stateroom belonged to her neice. Again it goes to *perspective* which in turn leads to speculation. Another thing I noticed is that unlike the Reuter's link I saw this morning, they claim the court has not ruled as yet whether the Captain stays home or goes back to jail. Just before posting this, I went back to the report and Reuter's still has the story as it was linked earlier. I can't find a second source to back up the claim. Davyjonesrugrat Posted February 7, 2012 #540 Share Posted February 7, 2012 Why, I could suggest that the Captain was innocent, a victim of circumstance. Whilst the Captain was at dinner someone else changed course (maybe on the orders of Costa). When the Captain called Costa to protest about their alteration to course, they sacked him and some senior officers over the phone (why, I don't know). As he was no longer in charge of the ship, he evacuated (he took the laptop because emails on it would prove Costa at fault). This could be right, as I'd assembled it from a number of 'reliable' media reports!Yes await the court proceedings however there is only one thing wrong with your posting - The Captain has already admitted doing it ! rgds :)
