Jokelady Posted January 29, 2012 #1 Share Posted January 29, 2012 I haven't seen any updates lately about the crew of the Costa Concordia? Anyone heard anything more about what the crjuise lines has done for them? Some stories I read said that the cruise line hasn't helped them and they were wandering Italy? Other reports said they were having to beg their embassies for help because they were not getting help after losing all their belongings etc. Anyone comment? Waihekean Posted January 30, 2012 #2 Share Posted January 30, 2012 Yes, it amazes me too that there is no news out there regarding the crew. Only have seen one photo where crew was waiting in a corridor, I think it was at a Costa office and they seemed to have been waiting a long time. It is also really hard to find interviews with survivors, maybe it is still a bit early for that or maybe there are not many English speaking interviews. Aus Traveller Posted January 30, 2012 #3 Share Posted January 30, 2012 The staff are unlikely to members of CC because they are nearly always away working and when they go home they probably have a lot of other things to do. Just because we haven't heard, I don't think we should assume that Costa isn't looking after them.
qtlikeme Posted January 30, 2012 #4 Share Posted January 30, 2012 While on board the ferry that moved passengers of the Concordia from Giglio to the mainland, we asked the crew we met on the ferry what was next for them. One young man had been asked to extend his contract by one week (he had fulfilled his 8 month contract and agreed to work one more week) He should have been on his way home when the ship disaster happened!! They told us they were paid in cash throughout their contract and all that cash was in their cabins! Later we asked a Costa representative what happened to the staff and she said they were flown home at the expense of Costa. We also heard they were given 40 euros each!!! It that is true, that's a disgrace!!!
bluesy Posted January 30, 2012 #5 Share Posted January 30, 2012 I found this article about Filipino crew returning home. It sounds as if their embassy and concerned members of their community stepped up to the plate for them. Third Batch of Filipino Crew Members of MV Costa Concordia Comes Home Tuesday, 24 January 2012 Prior to their departure, a Thanksgiving Mass for the Filipino crew members, was held yesterday at a local church located in the vicinity of Hilton Hotel where the Filipino seamen are temporarily staying while waiting to be repatriated back to the Philippines. It was organized by Filipino priests in Rome. In his message after the mass, Ambassador Reyes commended the Filipino crew members for their courage, perseverance and professionalism. He likewise thanked the members of the Filipino community who helped the Embassy, and who directly helped all the Filipino seamen by providing basic necessities. After the mass, Embassy officials and concerned members of the Filipino community joined the Filipino seafarers in a simple dinner, during which basic needs such as winter clothes, shoes, and bags brought by the community members and other concerned individuals were distributed to the seafarers. http://www.pinoybrunei.com/index.php/expose/filipinos-around-the-world/1954-third-batch-of-filipino-crew-members-of-mv-costa-concordia-comes-home- And this - Compensation Roño said all of the 296 crew would still be paid for the three months remaining on their contract onboard the Concordia. In addition, Costa Crociere, the company that owns the Concordia, has stated it will give full compensation to the Filipino crewmembers, refund their lost belongings and replace their lost cash. The Philippine Government is also offering its help, including stress debriefing for the crewmembers. “The government is obliged to give them free counseling to help them recover fast from the traumatic experience,” said Nicon Fameronag, spokesman for the Department of Labor and Employment. http://www.filipinoreporter.us/arts-a-entertainment/culture/1669-pinoys-recall-concordia-adventure.html
