gratamama Posted January 30, 2012 #1 Share Posted January 30, 2012 I am sailing April 7. I am about to pay for the balance of the trip in the next few days. We bought this cruise directly through Carnival over the phone - and signed up for insurance, but now i see on the website there is an option to remove it. You think i can remove it and purchase through a third party, which i understand is less expensive/ just as good? thoughts?

I find it good if you are using them to book yours flights tho... otherwise I would call them to remove it and purchase the other policy if it meets all your requirements,,

beachbum53 Posted January 30, 2012 #6 Share Posted January 30, 2012 If you feel comfortable in shopping around for travelers insurance, you can easily find the type of coverage that you need, at a lower cost than purchasing it through the cruise line. Most people go to "insure my trip dot com". If you need insurance to cover a pre-existing condition, you need to purchase it within 30 days of you initial deposit. Rare sparks1093 Posted January 30, 2012 #7 Share Posted January 30, 2012 First you must realize that you would not be able to get coverage for any pre-existing conditions at this stage of the game unless you find a company that will waive them for an additional fee. I would recommend you go to insuremytrip.com and see what options you have (you can use the compare feature of the site to compare policies). Luckyroot Posted January 30, 2012 #8 Share Posted January 30, 2012 Just remember that you are no longer in the "pre-existing" time frame. Also, I have the Carnival insurance for our upcoming cruise. My dd was going to go with us, but started a new job and had to back out (after final payment). With Princess insurance, we're getting back 100% of the port fees and taxes, and 75% of the cruise portion in the form of a FCC good for 2 years. mid20scruiser Posted January 31, 2012 #11 Share Posted January 31, 2012 My husband and I booked our cruise in may 2011 and we purchased the insurance through carnival at that time. I was thinking about removing it. Our cruise leaves september 2012. Is it too late to get insurance else where.

If covered by a third party insurer (either through normal coverage or cancel for any reason coverage) then you'd receive a cash refund, FWIW. I've only used Carnival Insurance, so I don't know much about 3rd party. How soon around booking the cruise do you have to book 3rd party insurance to get the waiver without the extra premium? It varies by company but 15 days seems to be the norm (but of course check the policy you are thinking of purchasing). The clock starts ticking as soon as you make your deposit.
