A day in Nice!

Hello all,

So I know I've asked a few other questions and have done a lot of reading and I think I now have a list of sites to see for my day in Nice, but I have a couple questions:

From Villefranche take #100 bus to Nice - does anyone know exactly where this lets off in Nice? I am trying to locate it on my map.

Places to see:

1. Flower Market

2. Le Chateau - are the steps and elevator down along the water?

3. Promenade des Anglais

4. Old Nice

5. Rue de France Pedestrian Zone

6. Russian Cathedral - this seems a little far from the old town. Is it?

7. Nice Archaeology Museum and Roman Ruins - this seems far inland too? Is this do-able? Should we take a cab or just skip it due to distance and stick to exploring the old town. Is this too much for 1 day? Did I miss any major sites?

Any and all suggestions are welcome! Thank you :)

:) hello i m living there!!

so first : May is a very heavy month : holidays, Monaco race and days off ( the 1 , 8 22)

3) the final stop of the 100 is near " the place Massena, in front of the water place and the little garden

you just have to cross the street and you will have : the old town, the market ( not on monday) The pedestrian way is on the other side of Place Massena ( it 's a lot of shopping ) the castle, Hotel Negresco , and museum Massena are in the same distric

4) the castle got steps and elevator ( ouch!!!it s better !) there is a wonderfull view from the top of the tower there's also a marine's museum but not terrible

5) Russian cathedral is too far i think it s on the middle of the boulevard Gambetta ( Tzarevich street)

the archeology Museum and the Ruins are on the top of the town don't thing you ll have time

i recommand you to go to see the Negresco hotel comme inside it's very old fashionned and just accross you have the Massena Museum wich is really a nice place to go A museum with the paint , picture and the clothes of the people of Nice since is fondation !!!

the cab are very expensive here

if you need more information just mail me :)

I have two suggestions for Nice.

  1. Hotel Negresco is a former palace and has an incredible foyer. It is worth stopping in for 15 minutes. Amazing.
  2. Chagall Museum

I agree with Cours Saleya (flower market) and a walk along the Promenades des Anglais along the water (that's where you'll find the Negresco). We also just enjoy walking through the Old Town. We have gone to Nice twice through stops in Monaco and taken the bus. If we ever make it back, we'll go to Eze.

Thanks for the great suggestions. I am compiling a great list for my trip! :)

I am curious though, this is my first time to the area and many of you have raved about Eze. What is it that you love about it? Should I be visiting Eze instead of Nice?

Loving this post and learning! My TA said I would enjoy Eze a lot. I think if we do go to Eze we will do it from Cannes as I want to see the flower market for sure.

hello again

Eze is a very nice village ..... but too small to stay one day long !!! ( see picture)

i think ( but that's only my opinion of course ) for the first time Nice is more spectacular and there is a lot of more thing to see

What is the best way to get to Nice from Monte Carlo? Train? Bus?

Thanks pobulus! So Nice it will be for me! :)

DEL67 - from what I understand you can get on the #100 bus to Nice (be sure to check the direction of the bus. The bus only costs 1 euro for 75 minutes of travel, or 4 euro for an all day pass. I believe you can take the train as well but I have not looked into that option. Maybe some others with more experience can help!

They are both good options and we often make the decision based on where we happen to be in town. In Nice the bus station is pretty close to the old town area and they have two routes to Monte Carlo. There is the usual #110 bus which runs every few minutes, takes a little longer then the train, but gives you a nicer view along the route. There is also an express bus which is faster (does not run as often) but it uses a different inland route which is not as scenic. Keep in mind that the #110 bus only costs 1 Euro and stops at several different places within Monte Carlo so you can choose the stop that is close to the area you prefer. With the train it is simply point A to point B and the train station location in MC is not as convenient as the bus stops. The train also costs quite a bit more then the bus (I recall it was about 6 or 7 Euros but my memory could be wrong).

Thank you for the information. One more question: Approximately how long does it take the bus from Monte Carlo (wither near the Palace or the dock) to get to Nice?

Yes, The #100 (have no clue why I typed #110 in the prior post but it's the #100 bus) takes about 45 min.

hello again !!

first : when are you docking ???if it's working day no problems

but if it's Sunday or Holiday day (1 may 8 may 17 may 28 may) there's less train or buses so be careful about that

also as i told you May is a very busy month : a lot of holidays, Cannes festival, Monte Carlo race If you come from Monaco during the race time traffic is very heavy Same problem during the Cinema festival is you are from Cannes

the 100 bus is longer but the road is very nice

the train is faster, that' s all the train station is on dowtown area also

the 100 bus will let you near PLace Massena where there the most thing to see ( zone pietonne, Negresco, Massena museum, old town , castle promenade des Anglais, Saleya market )

i recommand you to go on Palais Lascaris in the Old town

and taste some Nice specialite to Rene socca ( near Place Garibaldi you can't miss it it s very known !)

they have pizza but also pan bagna , socca, beignet fleur de courges, farcis nicois, tourta de blea ......etc

behind the Cathedral always in the old town you have Fenocchio it an ice cream store very famous here they have more than 100 flavour !!!

in the the same street make a stop to the candy store name" Cure gourmande"

some picure of cours Saleya Cure gourmande Lascaris Palace

We are fininishing our cruise in Monte Carlo and are staying post cruise 1night in Nice (Hotel Suisse). We will, of course have luggage, etc and would prefer not to have to try and lug those around on the train/bus and would prefer a taxi or private car. I know this will be costly, but can anyone reccomend a car service or would we be better off just hailing a cab at the dock?

Also, should we have any problem getting a cab to the airport the next morning outside the hotel or will we have to Pre arrange that?(I know that different cities handle these thing differently so I'd like to be prepared)

Thank you!

hello chefnick

it's cheaper a cab !!!

they know when a ship is arriving ,so a lot are waiting outside !!

you hotel is just under the tower of the castle near the Saleya Market and the old town THe view from the rooms of this hotel are gorgeous !!!

don't worry for the cab for the airport Just ask the reception desk they will make arrangement for you

for the others :

you also have a drop off and on bus ( great way to see the most important district!) you have a stop, where the final stop of the 100 bus will let you (near Place Massena )

you also have : the little train it brings you throught the old town and get up to the castle you have comments in english too THe station is in front of the Meridien hotel on the Promenade des Anglais

We too will be coming in on the Breeze on October 2, 2012. Could anyone recommend a good authentic French restaurant to eat at in Nice? I would love to have some Fois Gras in France :)

Also, is it worth it to go to Eze or just stick to St Paul de Vence and Nice out of Monaco?

We could recommend several restaurants in Nice (all restaurants in France are authentic restaurants in France) but we find its often best to do a little browsing of cafes/restaurants paying close attention to their Carte du Jour (Menu of the day) which is usually posted on a chalk board or a daily printed menu. For Nice we recommend walking through the old town area and looking at menus (its lots of fun) and making sure you check the menus of the cafes located on and near the Cours Selaya. If you are truly a lover of regional French cooking and a bit adventurous we might point you towards La Merenda which is a small old town (Nice restaurant) owned by Chef LeStanc. Not sure if he even would take a lunch reservations and he may not even answer the phone :). But this man is an absolute genious when it comes to cooking (we loved him when he was the Chef at Chanteclar in the Negresco).

Will you really be in Nice (where some ships can dock) of will you be in nearby Villefranche where all ships must tender. This is a huge difference since tendering can take several hours off of your already short port day. You can get between all these places by either using the train or bus. As to jumping on the beach in Nice you would likely stub your toe (or worse) on the rocky beach :). It is possible to go onto the beach and in the water, but if you are thinking of renting a chair bring lots of Euros.

hello

don't worry the Grand Prix is on 24 til 27 so no problem about that

your problem is the hour 7h AM it's really early and nothing is open

you will have to make a choice : staying in Monaco or Nice

what i suggest you is taking the 100 bus to go to Nice a 7 AM staying in the old town ( cours Saleya the castle Place Massena etc.... ) take the 100 back to Monaco around 12H30 ( 45mn ) you ll will have time to see Monaco too

Does anyone have any info on Castel Plage, a private beach and restaurant in Nice? My wife and I are considering spending an afternoon there in August.

Thanks!

:( i hardly not recommand you to go on private beach on summer time ( very crowdy, prices twice more than usual, lot of waiting before to be served, etc.)

We arrive 8 a.m. until 11 p.m. on a Saturday October 13 and are docked in Nice. I have read suggestions and I'm anxious to see the Market (will it be open) the Castle, and suggestion for economical lunch spot also if Matise/Chagall museums will be open. Also would like to go to Eze for a few hrs. to purchase reasonable priced perfumes to take home to family. Friends traveling with us wish also to to Monaco/Monte Carlo. Can we fit everything in one day. What are the best options? What are the best items to purchase and remember the French Riveria? Thank you, Merci!!!

You should head directly to the Flower Market which will be at the Cours Selaya in the old town area (only a couple of blocks inland from the harbor). Nice's old town is also a great place for lunch (the Flower Market is surrounded by cafes and restaurants). Eze is nice (but the public bus does not run very often so you need to plan) but is not the place for perfume. The town famouse for perfume is Grasse (nowhere near Eze). As to items to buy, you might want to get some spices at the Flower Market but there are very few bargains in France where VAT taxes add around 20% to everything. Most European goods can found cheaper in the US (especially on the internet).

Yes, you can do it in a day (cheaply and on your own) if you plan around the #112 bus schedule. Here is a link to get the schedule (just click on the download PDF)

http://www.lignesdazur.com/horaires_ligne/?rub_code=6&lign_id=1093

This bus starts from the small Nice bus station that is located just North of Nice's old town.
