What to do in Galveston?

We are driving in to Galveston (from Austin) the morning of the cruise.

 

I'm preparing myself for the possibility of a fog delay. What would you do in Galveston? Should we just find a Whataburger and hang out? Or is there a can't miss?

If you are delayed due to fog, I'd recommend walking around the Strand.

Thanks for the ideas. It sounds like the fog delays can be signifigant- so I wanted a plan, since it seems they don't even want you waiting in the port building.

There is a Starbucks, restaurants and plenty of shops on the Strand, good place to kill time. I'm guessing your going to park close to or at the terminal since you have a car and the Strand is certainly within walking distance. You could drop off luggage with Porter, park your car and go see the Strand:)

right there at the port....the Elissa is a neat thing to see; she's part of the TX Seaport Museum and is a "tall ship", there is also a museum that shows the story of the Big Hurricane (1900). The Strand is fun and there are several restaurants in that area. Not sure what's open on Sundays, but several of the historic homes are open for tours. Have fun!

Not much is open on Sundays during the winter. There's more offered during the summer.

 

You can kill an hour up to an entire day walking around the Strand (within walking distance). There are a few art galleries off of the Strand that sometimes have interesting exhibits.

 

If you have plenty of time, you can always take the ferry to the mainland and see what's left after Hurricane Ike (the road runs very close to the beach).

 

Moody Gardens will be open. It's a little expensive, but you can pick what you enjoy - I like the aquarium (the penguins are cute), and there's a rain forest and another pyramid to explore. You will need to drive here.

Not sure what you mean by "not much open on Sunday".

Everything is open due to Galveston being a tourist destination. There are a few upscale restaurants that are not open, but all the stores on the Strand and Galveston Historical Foundation venues are all open.

 

Sunday is when we get out and shop on the island.

 

The ferry to Bolivar peninsula - not much there but beach houses - but it is a neat ride across the channel. Stingaree is a good restaurant on the intercoastal canal - 13 miles from the ferry.
