what month was the sea the roughest for you?

Costa Riviera March 1992...

Lowest passenger deck midship outside, old ship porthole style cabin with the beds alot like the Fantasy Class twins when separated agst each wall in L configuration. Big ledge for portholes and sat in the ledge watching the waves almost hit the window and ship really rocking..i was never sick and loved it and I have to yell "off" of kiddie rollercoasters so not like that LOL...but it was a diagonal walk along halls and stairs and movie watching felt like you went into theater and had popcorn and pop on the merry go round horse going up and down you could feel it in there, mid-center of ship..have no idea how rough by the technical level and was way to dumb to be scared..but I know there is much worse..Sarah

About 20 years ago, which was my first cruise (I've done about 14 or more now) on Holland American, in January. Oh my.:( We were trying to eat at the table, and as soon as we started to put our fork or spoon in our mouth, we would wind up going the opposite direction. It was something else, and also funny at times. When standing, sometimes we had to brace ourselves, just to stand. Also, our dresser drawers, as well as the bathroom door kept rolling in and out, and banging back and forth. It was a miracle:) that we were NOT tossed out of bed.

I think one other cruise in January or February was the same way.

These trips were to the Caribbean, and I think they are making the ships more stabalized now.

We have sailed tons of times during hurricane season. My worst seas were in May on the Holiday out of Mobile. We actually listed over a little and two employees were injured - things were crashing in the kitchen, etc. Winds were so bad we were unable to dock in Freeport. Would never have expected that in May!

I think I've got pictures of that cruise taken from the Pride. I was hoping to get shots of the Holiday coming in to Freeport before she retired, but just saw you off in the distance sailing away. Have some way off pictures of her. :) If I'm right, that was the same week we had such rough seas coming down the coast from Baltimore. 18-20 feet, cold, and rainy most of the cruise. A strong cold front came across the U.S. and then hit the gulf stream which made for a fun ride. I enjoyed it, though.

Without a doubt, February

Mine was probably Feb too. None of my cruises were too rough (never had barf bags put out or things on the ship falling around and breaking...I've seen the vidoes where that happens)...but last Feb from Jaxport to the Bahamas was the bumpiest.

You may be the same person who responded when I wrote the review, saying that they were hoping to get shots of the Holiday and then we never showed up! I just went to Freeport for the first time (last week, actually), and now I can see why the Holiday might have had trouble - it's actually a very small channel that you have to go through in order to dock. It was definitely a ride that week. ;)

Sept going to Bermuda (out of Bayonne)

Early Nov sailing out of NY to Caribbean

Both instances sea was rough due to hurricanes.

I have also sailed during hurricanes where I wasn't affected by rough seas because on those itineraries the Captain was able to get to calmer waters.

It's luck of the draw...Mother Nature, there's NO predicting her.

Best answer...while many times they can go around worst water and there is a hurricane time no doubt..sometimes they are not avoided..or they avoid worst but the best is rough...all in all I am sure more people remember, at least a high percentage of good trips, rather than super bad sea trips for pleasure cruising...Sarah

I dont think there is a month that you cannot encounter bad water.

My worst was Jan. Only time I have ever been sea sick, but it could have just as easily have been another month. The next Jan cruise I took the seas were as flat as glass.

Someone posted a thread titled "this is why OV windows don't open" or something like that. They attached a youtube video of the porthole going 2-3 feet below the water when waves hit. They were on the Pride. Not sure where though. It looked really cool. Try to search for the thread or go to youtube and search " under the sea"

  • 3 weeks later...
My worst and almost only rough cruise was on the Glory in September of 2008 when she was sailing out of Port Canaveral..........

We had about 12+ foot seas....lots of folks were ill, not me or sister but my only mishap came in the casino when I leaned one way to sit down at a slot machine and the ship leaned the other way and I ended up sitting on the floor...........good thing I have so much padding..........:p

Worst seas in the Carribean will be during the winter, especially after the first of the year when the cold fronts can drive deep south. Early spring can be bad too. This is from someone who fishes offshore for tuna and marlin.

Late Summer, the peak of hurricane season, is actually the calmnest period. During this time, there are huge areas of high pressure and high temps that make for large areas of pancake flat seas. Of course these areas provide the power to form hurricanes. But at long as you avoid the actual hurricane, seas will be flat. But you will sweat.

January going back to Mobile from Cozumel.
It wasn't bad enough to be scary, just fun.
Did not get back into Mobile until after lunch.
So I got to have the Mongolian Beef Salad, my favorite, again.

Interestingly, we have been in the Gulf when hurricanes were about and it was not all that rough.
We were on the last Sensation cruise to get back into New Orleans during Katrina and it was not too bad.
We debarked on evacuation day.
They embarked the next group of passengers and sailed out early.
Those people did not get back to New Orleans.:(
