Wildcatfish Posted February 12, 2012 #27 Share Posted February 12, 2012 Thanks for the review! My wife & I spent our honeymoon one month later than you on NCL' s Seaward, and have enjoyed cruising ever since. Love the photos! Yes, we were rockin' those 90's fashions. Hard to believe it's been 20 yrs.
Texas Teen Posted February 12, 2012 #28 Share Posted February 12, 2012 Wow - a picture review of a cruise that was taken two years before I was born! You don't see reviews like this every day... thanks for sharing!
chef_christoph Posted February 12, 2012 #29 Share Posted February 12, 2012 What a great idea! I'm loving your review so far. I just disembarked Monarch a week ago this morning and even though she is older, Monarch is still a wonderful ship with a fantastic crew. I look forward to the rest of your nostalgic review. :)
Rare Familygoboston Posted February 12, 2012 #30 Share Posted February 12, 2012 We cruised her in Nov 1993...Today, everyone whines about Oasis and Allure and say they prefer these "petite" older ships. Makes me laugh...those of us with institutional memory know that in 1992 Monarch was ridiculed... for being so much bigger than the other ships already out there. LOL!:p:D
tispwisp Posted February 12, 2012 #31 Share Posted February 12, 2012 Love the review! Talk about stepping back in time - I remember the fashions well! Can't wait to see the rest of pictures. Thanks so much for sharing!
Loralie Posted February 12, 2012 #32 Share Posted February 12, 2012 Love your review. My DH and I took our first cruise on the Monarch in 1993 for our honeymoon. Your review brings back memories, can't wait to read the rest! :) Loralie
MonaCK Posted February 12, 2012 #33 Share Posted February 12, 2012 Thank you for this! What a fun read :) I look forward to seeing more pictures. This is making me want to scan in some of the pictures I have from my first cruises.
BBT Posted February 12, 2012 #34 Share Posted February 12, 2012 This is fun. Even though I have never sailed the Monarch, like you I remember my very first cruise & ship, SS Norway, with great fondness. The first cruise is always special, no matter what. Looking forward to the rest of your trip on a 'memory cruise'. Thanks for sharing.
nycruiser80 Posted February 12, 2012 #35 Share Posted February 12, 2012 Kathy,Its a long winter here in New Hampshire. I have been going through all our old photos. We are selling our house and i decided to start collecting all the pictures we have ever taken, i dont recomend this!!! Anyway, i came across our honeymoon on the Monarch and scanned them and then started reading all the reviews of the new ships but not many on the older. Besides the Monarch is something very near and dear to me and i thought i would share it with CC. I hope you all enoy. I took this pic while we were exploring the ship. I think, but cannot be sure that that is a old Carnival ship. Im trying to maintain some sort of ordor but i think i will lose track. I have many more to scan so keep checking it. I'm loving your review! As I get older I enjoy the new ships but have found that the older ships had a lot of charm. That ship in your photo is Paquet Cruises Mermoz. Paquet Cruises was a French cruise line. The Festivale stayed with Carnival until 1996 I beleive when she then moved to a now defunct line called Dolphin Cruise Line. Buffettphan1 Posted February 12, 2012 Author #37 Share Posted February 12, 2012 Heres on with the Monarch in the backround while we had lunch. Not sure where this was but it was a very col, "tropical" place right on the beach.
Buffettphan1 Posted February 12, 2012 Author #38 Share Posted February 12, 2012 Here are a few of the dining room. It does appear small, closed in. But at the time it was huge! Our waiter, although i cannot remember his name, was great. Always smiling. The midnight buffet was a experience too. Can't stay up that late anymore. Buffettphan1 Posted February 12, 2012 Author #39 Share Posted February 12, 2012 Here is a couple of the pool deck with the Steel drum band playing. It seems that's a staple part of any cruise. Since i have been on the Monarch and the fact that she is the oldest and smallest in the fleet, i would have thought that all my other cruise experiences would seem so much "BIGGER". But they really don't. I have not been on another ship that makes me feel like it is so much bigger or better. They all have so much of the same feel to them. So many of the same features that it is hard to really distinguish the difference. Maybe it is just me.
Buffettphan1 Posted February 12, 2012 Author #40 Share Posted February 12, 2012 I dont remember much of the casino, maybe thats because im not much of a gambiler. I do remember it was impresive to see for the first time. We played slots from time to time but mostly just passed through. I dont have any pictures that i can find, of the theater. While we were on board, Jerry Van Dyke did some comedian shows and it was great. He was so funnie. At the time i didnot know who he was until several years later when i saw him on "Coach". Buffettphan1 Posted February 12, 2012 Author #41 Share Posted February 12, 2012 Our room was small and the bathroom even smaller. Not many pics of the room itself but then again there is not much to show. We had stateroom #2569 and it was decorated for our honeymoon with a bottle of cheap champagne from our TA. Very nice of her. Midnight room service with a can of Bud was very cool to me. Although i could not figure out why they stood in the doorway for a few awkward seconds after delivery. LOL I do now!! What a trip that was!!!! Note the bucket of Banks beer in the sink and the empty on the shelf. Thats one thing that has not changed over the years!!! And we still have those RCCL novelty glasses! erbunny Posted February 12, 2012 #42 Share Posted February 12, 2012 Thank you for this wonderful review. Our 2 Monarch cruises were delightful. If there were a Cruising Hall of Fame, Monarch would be there for introducing so many people to this wonderful way of vacationing. Could the quartet you show in the Atrium be the original Rosario String Quartet ? Again, thanks for bringing back so many memories, and best wishes to you and your wife. beachnative Posted February 12, 2012 #43 Share Posted February 12, 2012 Thank you for your review. We love the Monarch and return to her whenever we drive to Florida for a cruise on one of the newer ships. She still looks very nice and has a fantastic crew. Our first cruise was on the Majesty in her early days and someday we'll work her into our schedule.
Buffettphan1 Posted February 12, 2012 Author #44 Share Posted February 12, 2012 We went on this pirate ship booze cruise. Not sure where this was either. When we set out everyone was calm and low key, when we came back in, right next to the Monarch, we were loud, dancing and it was just damn good fun. People on board the Monarch were running to the railing to see what was going on. All i can say is "free rum"!!! We went out to a lagoon where we could swing on a rope swing. A woman went out and decided she didnot want to let go, came right back in and hit the side of the boat. It was ugly! No damage to the boat or her. They also did a pirate wedding of the two in the picture. It was a great time. When we got back on board the Monarch the party didnot stop. Dancing on the pool deck and Horse racing! Im kind of glad no one knew me!!
Sharon Sails Posted February 12, 2012 #45 Share Posted February 12, 2012 what really stood out for me is the photo of all the people around the pool... not as many really overweight people as you'd see today in a pic like that. I know, I've seen so MANY of them! It helps show how America truly has become obese. Sad :(

PH8 Posted February 12, 2012 #49 Share Posted February 12, 2012 Did the dining room staff dress like that every night??? and looking at the midnight buffet, they sure have come a long way now with all the ice carvings and fruit/veggie carvings...in those days,I bet that was really impressive The outfit on the guy in the first pic is the same they wear now(the navy and white)....... and are those deck chairs all different colors?? Its so fun to see how some things are totally different, while some are pretty much the same..
