Brendarudd28 Posted February 24, 2012 #2 Share Posted February 24, 2012 We were on the Inspiration last year during Cinco De Mayo and even stopped in Cozumel that day. I was all jazzed up for some happenings on the island, but there were none. I found out that Cinco De Mayo is a sort of Americanized holiday and they do not celebrate it in Mexico. Bummer. However, on the ship they did have a big Cinco De Mayo party later that night where people showed off all the garb they had bought in Mexico including a sombrero contest. Rhitson88 Posted February 24, 2012 Author #3 Share Posted February 24, 2012 Yeah we aren't going to Mexico so I wasn't sure if they would still do something on the ship. Also because its the day were leaving too. Half price drinks?? Haha.
Rare skittl1321 Posted February 24, 2012 #4 Share Posted February 24, 2012 I was all jazzed up for some happenings on the island, but there were none. I found out that Cinco De Mayo is a sort of Americanized holiday and they do not celebrate it in Mexico. Bummer. I don't think it would be relevant to Mexicans outside of Puebla. If you were there, rather than Cozumel, you might have seen something. I'm not exactly sure why Americans celebrate it... It's kind of like the Battle of Gonzales- no one outside of Texas would care about that in the US, but there are regions of Texas that still celebrate the win. Chigirlcruzin Posted February 25, 2012 #8 Share Posted February 25, 2012 No acknowledgement/celebration on the ship. We were in Mexico on Cinco de Mayo. The Mexicans didn't do anything to celebrate it. It's an American thing to celebrate.
conchead Posted February 25, 2012 #9 Share Posted February 25, 2012 It is about the same as a state holiday in the U.S. Sept 16, Mexican Independence Day. Is the "Big" holiday in Mexico.

shealey107 Posted April 27, 2014 #12 Share Posted April 27, 2014 This is actually my first post on this board but I've been lurking forever and actually know about this. We were on the Paradise last Cinco De Mayo, the day before we were in Cozumel. They had a late night party on the Lido deck with Mexican food, margarita specials and activities. Wish I still had the Funtimes with exact info, but I remember it went on pretty late. Our cruise was also during the Kentucky Derby, which is next week as well so might be during your cruise too. They celebrated this as well with Mint Julep drink specials and a Derby hat contest (so bring a big one!). I believe they also had horse race betting in the casino. Rudyard Posted April 27, 2014 #13 Share Posted April 27, 2014 I'm not exactly sure why Americans celebrate it... Because the beer companies realized there's a sucker born every minute (yes, I drink beer, no I don't celebrate someone else's regional holiday). dd2355 Posted April 28, 2014 #15 Share Posted April 28, 2014 Any updates in the last six years? Nope. It's still a pretty minor Mexican holiday translated by various entities into an United States celebration of Mexican culture. This is typically characterized by alcohol producers and bar owners hyping up the holiday to generate greater sales.

I wonder if that was just a coincidence. There's a Mexican buffet on every cruise and there's also margarita specials one day. I was on Fantasy last year and they didn't even have the Mexican buffet on 5/5. I'm guessing there will be absolutely nothing Cingo de Mayo related next week on Pride. It is also our first elegant evening so it won't be the Mexican buffet night, either. But if I want a Corona, I'll have one.
grumpyjr88 Posted April 29, 2014 #17 Share Posted April 29, 2014 In Houston, my middle school and high school used to celebrate Cinco de Mayo every year. We were treated to traditional dress and dancing and food which was a lot of fun. I was surprised when I moved to DC to find out it is an 'American' holiday that is celebrated much like that other great American holiday, 'St. Patrick's' day. I think a sombrero decorating contest would be fun!
