jerseygirl3 Posted February 26, 2012 #1 Share Posted February 26, 2012 We will be on the 3/29 sailing of Silhouette out of Bayonne with some family members. My sister has almost 12-year-old twins. Last year on the Enchantment out of Baltimore, they allowed kids in the solarium during the first day or so and the last day back due to cold weather. Will the kids be allowed in the Solarium on Silhouette for the first day or two? With it being March and cruising out of Bayonne, I'm sure it won't be swimming weather in the regular pools. Anybody have any recent experience with this? TIA, Jo-Ann

Oxo Posted February 26, 2012 #3 Share Posted February 26, 2012 On Solstice they allowed families for an hour in the morning and afternoon. It could change as it always does.
jerseygirl3 Posted February 26, 2012 Author #4 Share Posted February 26, 2012 Well, I hope not! The 'Solarium' is an 'Adults Only' venue! :) Yikes! Didn't mean to send you into such a tizzy. I asked because, although I'm fully aware its an adult venue, given the ship is sailing in winter from the Northeast, I figured they would let the kids use the pool (with adult supervision, of course) the first day or two. Sorry if this upsets you. Jo-Ann

Jo-Ann I doubt they will. They didn't on our Alaskan cruise. The outdoor pool was understandably underutilized. Adult only areas are highly coveted and touchy areas of discussion as you have found out. :)
CathyCruises Posted February 26, 2012 #6 Share Posted February 26, 2012 On a Med cruise in November the weather was very cool and blustery a few days; they opened the Solarium pool for a few hours each day for kids. I wasn't paying much attention although we did enjoy sitting in there; never heard any commotion. I have read that they do open the Solarium for kids on the first few days sailing from Bayonne but I don't have any personal knowledge. I'm sure HAL NEVER opens it's indoor pool to kids. . .;)
photomama Posted February 26, 2012 #7 Share Posted February 26, 2012 I wouldn't mind if they allow a few hours in the morning for the kids, of which I had 4, but to allow them in the solarium for the whole first two days would, imo be totally unfair to the adult cruisers who have also paid their hard earned money to have a special area of their own. If they allow children in the solarium for two whole days, try explaining to them they are not allowed the rest of the trip, not easily done! Also it has been my experience that explaining to the kids the pools will be open in a few days, and until then they'll just have to enjoy the kids programs that I'm sure Celebrity will ramp up while pools are not able to be enjoyed should suffice. Some folks save years to be able to take their cruise, and expect to have the services described to them accessible, including adult only areas. If the parents handle it right, it shouldn't be a problem.
swsfrail Posted February 27, 2012 #8 Share Posted February 27, 2012 The solarium pool is advertised and as an adult only pool. Some adults who have outgrown their child rearing years look forward to quiet time in an adult only area. If you want your kids to have access to a pool during your cruise, perhaps the wise thing to do is to cruise during the warmer months when the outdoor pools will be available instead of expecting them to be accommodated in the one area that adults should be able to expect to enjoy for themselves. This may sound mean, but in reality it is fair. It is a matter of booking the cruise that offers you and your family facilities that are a match for their interests and activities, just as it is a matter of me booking a cruise that has facilities that match my interests. If I wanted to cruise with my grandchildren and expected them to have use of a pool for their enjoyment, I certainly wouldn't pick a cruise in the colder months and then expect other people to give up what they were looking forward to just to accommodate my grand kids. That would not be fair to the other people. The situation is no different than someone expecting to be accommodated in the MDR on formal nights wearing shorts and a t-shirt just because they want to dress casually that night. photomama Posted February 27, 2012 #9 Share Posted February 27, 2012 Solid1, having read your posts on another similar thread, I having taught for many years, think you are EXACTLY like the parents who think their kids are exempt from the rules. Why is it anymore important for junior to enjoy himself in a pool than an adult who doesn't want to listen to kids chatter and splashing. None, which is why there are choices. You knew when you booked a March cruise it would be cold out of NJ, yet you decide to object to Celebrity's policy after the fact. You think they should disappoint adults wanting to use a venue designated for them because you think it's unfair. Maybe you should of considered a cruise out of Florida and you wouldn't have had this issue, although I strongly suspect some other policy you didn't want to adhere to would have cropped up. 68rambler Posted February 27, 2012 #10 Share Posted February 27, 2012 our children are now 22 and 24, so we carefully book our cruises for times that most children will be in school. That said, it would be irritating, even during spring break time, to have children in the adult only areas such as the adult pool, the casino, the bars. I am not allowed in the children's program areas, your children can look forward to turning 18 and joining us in the adult areas.
NLH Arizona Posted February 27, 2012 #11 Share Posted February 27, 2012 I have also been on cruises where some of the more seasoned passengers were obnoxious, rude, opinionated and made the cruise less enjoyable whenever they were around. So AGE is not the primary factor in bad behavior. You are totally correct, I don't like cruising with obnixous passengers no matter what there age is - from baby to senior, but the subject we are discussing is children in an adult area and that is why I answered pointing out children's behavior. If you would like to start a thread on mis-behaving adults, I have some stories about them as well and I'm sure others do as well.
CI66774 Posted February 27, 2012 #12 Share Posted February 27, 2012 It's really up to Celebrity. If the powers at be allow children in for an hour or two on cold sea days because they can't use the outdoor pools - then so be it. If they don't - so be it. I can see why Celebrity would if it's too cold outside. They want all paying passengers to have a little enjoyment poolside. I also can understand if they completely restrict it to adults - either way - it's up to Celebrity - not us.
