Our Cruise on the Sun - Review

My DH and I just got back from a week on the Sun. We had a fantastic trip, sad to be home! I was pretty nervous about going, since the reviews had been pretty bad, but all my fears were for nothing. Not that everything was perfect, but it was a great cruise. This was our second NCL cruise and third overall (we did one HAL).

We had a balcony cabin on deck 10. There was tons of storage, plenty of space, and the bed was comfy. The balcony was a great size and we got a lot of use out of it throughout the week. The bathroom was a little worse for wear, but clean. Small shower, but it did the trick, and the water pressure was great. Our only big complaint was the TV. I know it shouldn't be a big deal, but my DH loves to nap and maybe watch a movie in the afternoon on a sea day and he was really disappointed that they didn't have a nice flat screen TV. It certainly didn't ruin our cruise, but he did moan about it from time to time. ;)

I have to say, the service was very good. A lot of people complained in prior reviews about cranky staff, but everyone was friendly and helpful. We met a lot of nice people. Our room steward was good. Not remarkable, though. When we checked in, no one had cleaned the fridge and someone left an old drink behind. But they remedied it quickly and it was no big deal.

The food was very good. We did specialty restaurants 5 nights, and they were all great. The MDR was very good, too, for breakfast, lunch and the two dinners we had there. We did Le Bistro twice (our fave), sushi, the steakhouse, and Il Adagio. We do like the experience of the specialty restaurants. The rooms are so elegant, and the service is just great. We ate a few breakfasts at Moderno, too. That was such a good cruise critic tip. Much less crowded, and much of the same food. We really never ate at the main buffet, other than maybe popping over from Moderno to find something special. It looked good, though. Las Rambles was a nice spot to stop in and have a few tapas with a drink.

The entertainment was pretty good. I really enjoyed the hypnotist and comic magician. The variety type shows were rather mediocre. We did enjoy Shout because it had a little humor in it. The other evenings, we actually scooted out early. The singer, Cat (I forget her last name), in Las Rambles was quite good also. We missed the comedian, but I heard he was good.

There wasn't much of a late night crowd on our sailing. We are in are 40s and by no means partiers, but we'd come out of the late show and meander to the casino and it was all usually pretty quiet. Still, we met some really nice people we'd see each evening. Everyone was in good vacation moods!

We did a cruise excursion in Cozumel to the Mexican cooking class. It was SO much fun! The chefs were hilarious, the food good, and the drinks were flowing freely. We had a nice day learning, cooking, then eating. Then relaxed on a lounge chair at the resort until it was time to go back to the ship. Well, I was actually in a bit of a two margarita stupor.

We did a local guide in Ocho Rios. We loved the falls. In Grand Cayman, we just walked around near the port. Great Stirrup Cay was very nice. We walked down to the adult section on the beach. It was peaceful, the weather perfect, the water beautiful. There was nice Caribbean music playing in the distance. It was a perfect way to end the cruise.

Glad you enjoyed your cruise!

Ive read that the newer ships and ships that are getting upgrades in the near future are getting flat screen TVs. Im right with you. Those old clunky TVs are pretty sad! :p

Of course its a cruise, so Im only really watching the news in the morning, but still..
