CanadaBunny Posted March 4, 2012 #1 Share Posted March 4, 2012 Sorry if this has been posted already, but how does one do a walk off on disembarkation day? DH and I will have suitcases, not just carry ons. Assuming we can manage it all ourselves, there's a specific lounge and time? Also, I thought I read somewhere that we're not allowed to use the elevator?? This is my first Princess cruise so bear with me! :)

This is my first Princess cruise so bear with me! :) The walk off meets in a lounge somewhere on ship usually around 7:15am to 7:30am. You will get a disembarkation information sheet approximately 2 nights prior to disembarkation day. This is what the disembarkation sheet said the last time I cruised: for passengers capable of handling their own luggage across the gangway and into the terminal, you have the option for a "self help" disembarkation. Those wishing to participate should NOT leave any luggage for collection the night before in the hallway outside the cabin. Kindly note that passengers choosing "self help" disembarkation are responsible for carrying all of their own luggage. I think you may use the ship elevator, but I am not sure once in the terminal the rules.
AttilaTheFun Posted March 4, 2012 #3 Share Posted March 4, 2012 Just got off the Crown yesterday. Walk-off was very simple - Princess will leave you a form early on in the cruise and ask you to tell them if you are walking off or not. The night before disembarkation, they send sheets with info on when the walk-off people can leave and what lounge to meet in at what time. For Crown, it was between 7-7:30am for walk-off - the first group on the ship. We were definitely allowed to use the elevators, but one in the mid-ship was reserved for passengers with disabilities, so maybe you couldn't use that one. Hope that helps! -Lew- Posted March 4, 2012 #4 Share Posted March 4, 2012 A few days prior to disembarkation, your cabin steward will leave a form in your cabin which addresses this issue. If you want to self-disembark, check the appropriate boxes and leave the form for your steward. If you select self-disembarkation, you'll receive a walk-off card for each occupant which they say will be necessary in order to walk off...in the 10+ walk-offs we've done we've never been asked to produce the card or turn it over. You can use the elevators; in fact, if you don't have one free hand, you'll not be allowed to use the escalator and must use the elevator. Self disembarkation is a quick and easy process if you can handle all of your luggage and other belongings with no assistance. Enjoy your cruise... labatsman Posted March 4, 2012 #5 Share Posted March 4, 2012 You pack your suitcases the night before and set them outside your cabin door. the crew picks them up and take them to a storage hold where they are unloaded first thing in the morning. You are responsible for your carry on bag etc You will be given a disembarkation number or letter and based on what time you leave your port ....ie air line flights etc is the time you get off. After breakfast you will go to the designated room, maybe a dining room or nightclub etc. this is normally on or close to the gangplank you leave. they annouce your letter or # and you get off and go find your luggage. You then go thru customs etc. No problem using the elevators. hope this helps

This is my first Princess cruise so bear with me! :) On all of the ships we have been on, the self walk off folks meet in the dining room starting usually around 7am. You do have to carry all of your bags. If you are talking about Fort Lauderdale, there will be an elevator you can use to go down to the 1st floor. You cannot use the escalator if you don't have a hand free. You will get a form asking about your disembarkation, you check that you are doing the express walk off and a night or two before you depart the ship you will get your walk off location and time in your cabin. You would carry them all by yourself but the passengers that are "walking off" are the first ones to get off. Can someone please confirm this? BobT172 Posted March 5, 2012 #9 Share Posted March 5, 2012 We did self disembakation twice... first time with small roller bag each was no problem however on the 2nd time we each had a large roller bag that would be too big to try to carry down the stairs in the ship... we experienced long waits trying to get an non-crowded elevator to go down to the waiting area (the casino in our case)...we learned to take the possible 'crowded elevator senario' into consideration. paul929207 Posted March 5, 2012 #11 Share Posted March 5, 2012 Maybe. If everything goes well, you will make it. However, if the ship is late, or there are problems with authorities approving the ship, or any other problem, then you will miss the flight. If that happens, you will be in for a long day, hoping to get on a flight. It may be early the next morning that you get out. I would not do it, but the choice is yours. -Lew- Posted March 5, 2012 #12 Share Posted March 5, 2012 If I do self disembark, would I be able to make a 9:30am flight out of Fort Lauderdale? We've been at the airport by 7:40am when we've done a self-disembark. Having said that, if the ship is late in arriving or not cleared for disembarkation in a timely manner for some reason, you could be delayed. It has happened. kywildcatfanone Posted March 5, 2012 #13 Share Posted March 5, 2012 If I do self disembark, would I be able to make a 9:30am flight out of Fort Lauderdale? thanks Kim Could you make a 9:30am flight? Yes it is possible, but it's risky. We have made a 8:50am flight and a 9:05am. But I was nervous the entire time. Everything has to go right, the ship has to return to the port on time, customs clears the ship, you clear customs and get to a taxi and to the airport. If any of that goes wrong for any reason, you could be in trouble. Do you have an option for a later flight? I try to get flights after 10am if possible. If it's your only option you could try it. You need to be in the 1st groups off the ship though. Mike

You have to be able to get it all off the ship and thru customs and immigration yourself. Also, there is an escalator where you must have a free hand to hold on. If you don't have a free hand you will have to take an elevator that quickly builds a line.

If it turns out hubby and I can't manage our bags ourselves, then we can't do the walk-off disembark. In that case, our disembark time is based on our flight time? So if we have a noon flight time (from US to Canada), I don't need to be nervous about not getting off the ship in plenty of time to get a cab to the airport? (Can you tell: I tend to worry! :o) BTW, yes, the port would be Fort Lauderdale.

paul929207 Posted March 5, 2012 #18 Share Posted March 5, 2012 I was at the airport yesterday at 7:40 for an 8:40 flight. Since it is recommended to get to the airport 2 hours early, did you make your flight? Do you mean this to mean that everyone will make a 8:40am flight
kywildcatfanone Posted March 5, 2012 #19 Share Posted March 5, 2012 I was at the airport yesterday at 7:40 for an 8:40 flight. Wow, did you have the 8:40am planned, or get there early and were able to move up in flight times? We have done an 8:50am and a 9:05am, but I was nervous the whole time. I wouldn't recommend it, but if all goes as planned it is obviously do-able. Mike
cattolica Posted March 5, 2012 #20 Share Posted March 5, 2012 There is a limit to how many self disembark passengers are alloted for every cruise. We tried to sign up and were declined as too many passengers had already signed up. We were actually happy to have missed the cutoff. Disembarkation was delayed due to the arrest of a passenger. Got to see him lead off the ship in handcuffs. Disembarkation was delayed by almost 2 hours.

Svenster Posted March 5, 2012 #22 Share Posted March 5, 2012 Boy, I don't know. If you show up with your bags at the disembarkation area where you insert your card to "ping" out, you will be let off whether you signed up for it or not. We have done that before. However, it is a bit risky to try to make a flight at 8:40 am since there is a lot out of your control. I will say that I love crusing from Ft Lauderdale because the airport is just so close to the cruise dock, and they are just so good at moving people around, that trouble is very rare.
