What to do near Paris rail stations?

After our upcoming cruises, we will be literally "passing through" Paris. We will have around 3 hours to fill in around Gare du Nord and Gare de l'Est - around lunchtime .

 

Any thoughts please??

Find a nice cafe and enjoy lunch! You cannot get more "Paris" then that and it will fill most of your time.

I went to Paris from London via the Eurostar a few years ago. We spent some time at an outdoor café. Great for people watching. It's amazing how fast time flies when people watching.

When we are sitting at an outdoor table, DH puts the camera on the table pointing out and then discreetly clicks the button when anyone interesting happens by. We have some GREAT photos taken that way.

Walk to Sacré-Coeur, it is only 1.5 kilometers from the train staion and is both a beautiful church as well as the best views of Paris outside ot the Eiffiel Tower. It is the highest point of the whole city.

I would second Sacre Coeur...and a stop at a cafe.

Re Sacre Couer

 

I understand that, being a very popular tourist destination, that area is frequented by some fairly unsavoury characters??

The area around Sacred Couer is itself a little dicey, but not so that you should feel intimidated. My wife and I spent a wonderful afternoon around and in Sacre Couer and Montmartre and never felt the least bit frightened. If you wander off toward the Moulin Rouge area, then I could see where you might feel uncomfortable. It is a bit raunchy there.

We felt quite comfortable there during our visit.

I have visited the Sacre Couer and Monmartre many times both during the day and after dark and never once felt ill at ease. Its so beautiful up there and the real 'essence' of Paris :)
