Perth Private Tour

Recommended Posts

Our cruise ends in Perth and our flight doesn't leave until midnight. We would like to find a guide and driver with a large enough vehicle to take the 4 of us and our luggage around for the day to see in and about Perth, because it will be our only time there. Any suggestions or experience?

The public ferry that leaves from Freemantle back to Perth is a lovely ride past

beautiful scenery and majestic homes. Freemantle itself is a worth at least a couple of hours, the goal (jail) and indoor market for souvenirs, beautiful seafood. In Perth itself the mint and Kings Park.

Hope this helps

If you can arrange to leave your luggage at the cruise terminal thats a great option. Ferry ride up the river to Perth and train back , or vice/versa. The train station and ferry are handy to the ship.

Another option , and one that some friends of mine did in a similar situation , could be to rent a car for the day from Fremantle , and drop it off at the airport in the evening?

IMO your first option is ok. The second option is quite expensive, bearing in mind we are talking about 4 people and 4 large pieces of luggage, you would require a station wagon and they cost about $300 a day from Fremantle with a drop off at the airport. A taxi I believe, if you could get one (you might need two) would cost about $70 . I don't know if the train goes to the airport, but somehow you might be better to head straight for the airport, store your luggage then spend a nice day looking around the Perth CBD.

My wife and I find ourselves in the same situation. We, too, have a 11:55 p.m. departure flight. I have been trying to find a day tour of the city to occupy our time between check out and our trip to the airport. Unfortunately, we have not been successful. We will continue to look. If we find anything, I will contact you via Cruise Critic.

Hi Cathy

I suggest maybe catch the train from Fremantle (where the ship will dock) to Perth city. You can leave your luggage at Citiplace rest centre for luggage storage $10/day. Then you can walk around Perth itself- the are various interesting things to see and do in Perth CBD and then catch a taxi when you are ready to the airport.:)

I have used these people several times to get us to/from Fremantle. Last time with four interstate friends staying with us the driver asked if we'd like to take a scenic route, he was very entertaining with his commentary

http://www.taxiwizard.com.au/

They have various sized vans and were very reliable with pick up time. You may be able to negotiate something with them.

Other alternative is a day rate at a hotel. Something we've done in the US and UK - nice to have somewhere to change and shower before your long flight home. Holiday Inn is a possibility.

I have attached a link for Citiplace for you - it has an info email line for you to contact as well: http://www.cityofperth.wa.gov.au/getfile/20334.pdf When you open it up - scroll down and it has directions as well. I got this information from Transperth.

Hope this helps - and hope it helps other visitors to Perth re luggage storage.

The best way to get to Perth from Fremantle is the train. It is direct - as Perth is about 20 kms away. the places . There is a "Tourist Tram" that goes from Kings Park down through Perth and right through to what was known as "Burswood Casino" (now the Crown Casino) and stops at the Perth Mint, worth a visit, and other places of interest - you can hop on and hop off. Here is the map - and times and places it stops. http://www.perthtram.com.au/pdf/city...rk_by_tram.pdf

This could keep you out of trouble for a couple of hours

Sadly there is nowhere in Fremantle to store luggage.

As an add on to the above post - you can jump on the tram anywhere on it's route - you don't have to make your way to Kings Park to get on it - but check with the driver - or maybe that info is in the link (I only glanced through it before posting it) We have used it when we have had people to come to stay with us - as a novel way to see and learn the history of Perth. (You know how it is - you live in a place and you take it for granted - then visitors come - and then they get to know more about it than you do :o)

I have also faced this dilema (in Perth and Sydney)

My basic suggestion would be to get yourselves and baggage to the airport (the cruise line should provide a shuttle) and leave your baggage with one of the baggage storage places - I think its about A$40 each piece. Then you can either have a pre arranged private tour pick you up and take you around, or simply grab a cab and visit the CBD and pick up on all the suggestions already offered.

I don't know your budget, but private tours can be a bit expensive, but well worth it for the intimacy and flexibility offered.

One offset might be to be picked up at the wharf at Freo and take your bags along on a private tour. Saves the cost of baggage storage. This option however would mean a pick up at say mid morning, so the tour would be quite extensive (=$$$s) if you wanted to not get to airport until after say 6-7pm.

Taking the shuttle to airport would chew up some time, so you could arrange for private tour to begin at say noon from the airport, which would give 6-7 hours...plenty of time to see the sights and even the Swan Valley wineries

Perth is such a wonderful place but they forgot about tourists short term needs!

I live less than 1/2 mile from Perth City centre so never really thought about tours and short term tourists!

My suggestion would be to get a "Maxi Taxi" 8 seater taxi van from the Fremantle port to Perth Airport Teminal 1,there will be many taxi,s coming and going from Fremantle passenger terminal on the day and a taxi porter who makes everyone line up will ask what you require and will direct you to a Maxi Taxi once available, around $65 to Perth international airport.(we did this last time from Fremantle passenger terminal to home,we were four and there was plenty of room for luggage)

Store your luggage at the airport.

Luggage storage lockers provided by Smarte Carte are available outside all three terminals at Perth Airport.

Terminal 1 (International)

At Terminal 1 the storage lockers are located between the car park and the terminal building.

It costs $8 for a small locker, $10 for a medium locker and $12 for a large locker, per 24 hour period.

Catch a standard cab from Terminal 1 to the city $30-$35

Option 1 catch the Tram for a tour of the city and kings park.

http://www.wcvg.com.au/index.php?section=81

walk around the shops afterwards, Then walk across to Northbridge for cafe,s/food/people watching then a cab back to Terminal 1 for your flight.

There are lots of cabs cruising Northbridge and you are allowed to Hail a cab.

Option 2 Get a ferry tour from Barrack st back to Fremantle on the Swan River, you will need to be at barrack st by noon for this though so may be a bit of a push if unrealistic? This is the best possible scenic tour of Perth if you ask me!

Standard Cab Fremantle to Perth Airport for your flight $50-$55

http://www.goldensuncruises.com.au/index.php?id=cruising-up.

For people who have not visited both Fremantle and Perth before it is unrealistic to catch a Public Transport Train from Fremantle to Perth City with cruise luggage:eek: especially as its a bit of a walk to the station and then you have to contend with the high foot bridge across the railway lines from Port side to get to Fremantle side!

Maxi taxi is the cheapest option in my opinion.

To visit Perth and only tour Fremantle would be tragic for travellers of so far that may never have another chance to see this beautiful city.

If you can find a place to store luggage cheap enough in Perth City it will be a bonus and save one trip to the Airport, any hotel in can call for a "Maxi Taxi" you may just have to wait a few extra mins.

Fremantle to Perth International Airport is only 30 KM and Perth City to international Airport is only 12 Km,Driving to and from Perth airports is a quick and simple task but public transport is either non existent or sucks waiting around forever.

Another thing to consider is the time of year! if between Jan and April there is a 99% chance it will be over 100 degrees with blindingsunshine :p And you will be wanting the luxury of air con all the way.

Also contact "Billabong" Luxury Backpackers, they are on Beaufort st Highgate,I am sure they will store your luggage for cheaper than the airport or rent a room from them for not too much just for luggage/shower.

A short 3/4 Km walk to Northbridge (cafe strip) and town from Billabong plus there are some really nice Pubs and restaurants/wine bars very close to Billabong on Beaufort st ,Taxis are available all the time there if you need to kill a few hours before the airport as you will not need to get to airport until 10 pm for 12 pm flight and Perth Airport is very quiet at night.

The Beaufort st Cafe strip (Near Billabong Backpackers) Is the safest after dark option in Perth as Northbridge has a bit of trouble with nightclub goers of late and The city itself can bring out a bit of unsocial behaviour after dark from roaming teens who call themselves "Street Kids".

I have attached a link to a company that offers an eight hour tour of Perth's Rottnest Island. It departs at approximately 8:30 a.m. and returns 4:30 p.m. You can contact them via the website about your special requirements and time considerations.

I hope this is useful to you and your family.

If this is your first time to Perth - Rotto is not the place to go - it is an island - with a cake shop - pub - café - a bit of a takeaway - and not much else. If you want to see "Perth" go into the City. You can visit the Mint, Kings Park, all the local touristy spots - shop in the City, people watch. Get a taste of Perth. This of course is my opinion - but being a local Sandgroper - I wouldn't be doing Rotto on a "chance in a lifetime" trip if I only have a few hours. Again, IMHO

Also for cathy82

Perth is quite a small city but spreads wide into many many suburbs.

Fremanle and Perth city are both although 20 odd kms apart easily walked individually and Guided tours as such are not really necessary.

Not sure where you are from cpb but if Australia you will realize that Perth and its surrounding suburbs is the most expensive place to visit and live in Australia and this includes most other world cities!

Getting a cab for 4 or even 2 people to and from fremantle/Perth/airport/beach etc. would be a lot cheaper than the cost of a driven tour for the day because of our very high wage structure.

All the sights are easily walk able with options of motorised tram tours and swan River boat trips,up the river for wineries and down the river for fremantle.

To put it in some sort of perspective,Perth city CBD is about the size of LongBeach C.A CBD.

The only problem for both groups being able to see all of fremantle and the best of Perth self guided in your time frame is "In-tow cruise luggage":)
