Inviting Crew Member to Cabin?

Has anyone ever gotten authorization to invite a crew member to your cabin? We know the wine steward in Vines and would like to invite him and his fiance to our cabin for a glass of wine after their work time. Went to the Purser's desk and talked to a very unhelpful person who supposedly called the Food and Beverage person, but we are pretty sure he didn't call him. It was such a quick phone call that it just seemed odd. Anyway, he said no it wasn't something that could be done.

So has anyone been able to do this? Any info would be helpful.

It's frowned upon, because of the potential for problems (not that you would but for example someone could claim they were assaulted.)

The person I think would need to authorize it would either be the Passenger Services Director or Hotel Operations Manager (and possibly the boss of the person involved).

Just thinking -

Your friends may have a conflicting work schedule, or not. The Food & Beverage Manager may be the boss of the Wine Steward (or not). But the Photo Manager definitely has a different person to report to.

I would get a nice card & write a very formal invitation, leaving the time open to their choice. Get 2 cards, one for each of them. Then they have something to show to their boss to show that U R all "Old Friends."

Be sure to put down your cabin number & ask that the Boss give U a call.

I hope this will work for you.

Hello Hulagirl, congrats on getting a wonderful Grand suite again. Hope you are really enjoying it. I would ask the person, they will know if they can or not, or you could ask the Hotel d' maitre D as should be the persons supervisor. Hope this helps. We have offered upper staff when delivering dinner to our suite if can have a small glass of wine and the answer has been no. Enjoy, Enjoy!!!

Thank you for the information. Understand about the potential for problems. Would never want to put anyone in that situation. Was hoping we could be able to do this. Tomorrow we will be going to the most traveled lunch and may ask then who would be the person to ask. Will also try the invitation approach too.

Thank you for the information. It has been a help.

Seadeck2: Yes, we are enjoying the Grand Suite. Always nice to call this cabin home even if for just 7 days. Thank you!

It's not going to happen. I was once on a cruise that my BiL was working on. We asked to go to dinner at Sabitinis. What a Pandora's Box that opened up. It caused quite the drama below deck. NEVER AGAIN

OMG - U got it licked. U will B having your photo taken with the Captain. Git him alone at the Most Traveled Pax Luncheon (look for a propitious time) and 'splain it to him. Mention that U have taken the Grand Suite.

Once on the Regal Princess we invited the Staff Captain to join us for dinner in the MDR. Much to our surprise he accepted and joined us:). It did cause some strange looks in the MDR.

On previous P&O cruises we have had the privilege of having the regular Captain join us but I think that is more of a tradition on the British ships. We were actually called in our cabin and informed that the Captain would be joining us for dinner.

At no time have we invited crew to our cabin but now wonder just how that would work. As others have said, I don't think that would be a common thing?

we did it once on HAL and i`m not sure it was authorized but as another poster said it may cause more issues for the employees and may not be worth it.

I agree this is not something we would have normally thought of, ever. But tonight we were sitting at Vines and the fiance of the wine steward came by. We found she has no problem being able to come to the cabin because she is Management, it is him because he is staff. She is going to talk to the Food and Beverage manager tonight and see if she can get it approved. We will also ask tomorrow at the Most Traveled luncheon.

If it can't happen, it isn't going to end the cruise, but it would be nice to be able to do this. We will see. I'm not going to count on it at all. But she may have some pull.

Certainly don't want to cause anyone, especially not him, any problems.

Hi There,

You have a couple of things you can do, if times work which might not be that easy,

drinks in a bar is possible,

for private event ask the Hotel Manager for a meeting room and take drinks, snacks with you,

cabin is not so easy unless we are talking very senior staff,

going for diner together in Crown Grill

if work times do not fit in try setting up a breakfast at Sabatinis

have done a wide range of things but the main thing is to get approval,

on my Ruby cruise captain joined me for diner in the Crown Grill, however I

did not invite him, but I was not going to turn him away.

yours Shogun

I believe that staff are told that they cannot, under any circumstances, go to a passenger's cabin. Please be careful that you don't embarrass the people you want to invite. Maybe if you want to socialise with them, it would be better to meet in a bar and you buy the drinks. :D

As others have said, at the Muster Drill, they include an announcement about not going to a crew member's quarters nor can they go to yours.

That's interesting because I am friends with a first officer and a dancer for princess and never encountered problems going into crew quarters or them coming to my cabin.

Hi Hulagirl,

Wish I could share some advice but we have never encountered this situation. Just wanted to say good luck and hope you can get your friends to join you for some socializing. It's really nice of you to extend the offer and I'm sure they appreciate it, even if the ship's management may be complicating matters. Enjoy the rest of your cruise! :)

Forgot to mention - if it is Florian - please tell him Adam and Debbie say hi. Probably won't remember us but we've been on with him twice - two years ago Vines and last year he was at the Martini Bar...here's a photo with him from 2 years ago....

A friend who was a waiter came to my cabin many times. He

didn't seem concerned, as the worst that would happen would

be that he would get a warning.

I conspired with two shoppees to buy liquor for them with the elite

discount on the last day of a cruise. They came by my cabin to

pick it up. They wanted to come in because they had never seen a mini-suite. They said they were allowed in pax cabins, as long as they were not alone, and as long as it didn't look suspicous.

On the other hand, everyone on the ships works very, very long hours,

and might not really have any time to visit.

For instance, the waiter -- after dinner service, there is cleaning.

If it is the night before a us port, there is 'deep cleaning' that takes

an extra hour or so (where everything is removed from the wait

station and polished); then, he might have to go to the lido and

roll napkins for an hour. So, folks work many, many more hours

than pax see, and have little free time to visit.

Desiro: You know who I'm talking about. They are on the Sapphire Princess. He just started last week. It is so good to see him again.

He is so hoping this will work out as well as his fiance. They are both very nice and it isn't something they feel would be putting them out or asking more of them than they want to do. If it was just small talk we wouldn't even bother. He said he thought it would be fun and is really hoping to do this. So we will see.

I will come back and post what happens either way. If we can't, we can't. Just hoping. If they didn't want to come believe me we wouldn't even give it a second thought.

Infi: How was the cruise? Did you get me last e-mail? Was it helpful for Costa Maya?
