Alaska Sea Days

The inside pool usually has its share of guests while the casino attracts others. There are usually a few lectures on wildlife, Native-American culture or Alaskan history during the days at sea. But I agree with the previous poster: the scenery. Even when far away from the coastline, I hang out on the balcony with a good book, my binoculars and camera and a gin & tonic or two. Being from the Midwest, far from either ocean, I never tire of watching the sea, other ships and the sea life. I can alway watch a movie or play silly games at home. Why waste time on the boat doing these things?

We sit outside for hours! :D

That's what I plan on doing on my first Alaska cruise coming up shortly. Well actually, that's what I've done on all of my cruises' sea days.

Going on the Golden in Sept. to Alaska and wondering what everyone likes to do on the sea days. I've only been on a Caribbean cruise before so spent sea days at the pool, which obviously isn't going to happen in Alaska.

I'm not sure if the weather has turned that much by September? But in July it's often warm in Alaska enough to spend sea days at the pool, and many people did that on the Sea Princess last summer when I was on it. Tough to count on it of course, the weather being rather unpredictable there. But yeah, most people just sit back and enjoy the lovely scenery. :)

One of the reasons I will always book a balcony or above room for an AK cruise is for the ability to simply sit and watch the scenery go by with either my favorite hot or cold beverage in hand. That is why I call them SEE days instead of sea days :D I also look to see what else is happening onboard ship and partake if I feel like it esp any nature talks or native culture activities.

Will be doing my 3rd Alaska cruise this May and I echo what others have said. Find a good spot (inside or outside), get a good pair of binoculars, your favorite beverage, and enjoy! I have seen a LOT of beautiful scenery and wildlife this way. Whales, bears, eagles, dolphins and miles of amazing coastline.

We did not do any ship activities in AK. We could not tear ourselves away from the scenery. Very different from the Caribbean where sea days are just ocean. You will need to experience it to believe it, but you won't want to miss anything!

For me, it's all about what is outside the ship. I skip meals, and don't go to any shows. I get those on other itineraries. I'm on a transAtlantic in a couple weeks, and am bored silly with the extended sea days. :)

Scenery, scenery and more scenery. It's so beautiful that it's hard to tear yourself away. However, I usually work in a massage or something at the spa, check out the gym in the early morning (you can still watch the scenery), and have the ultimate balcony breakfast on Glacier Bay Day--simply fabulous. Enjoy!

It's not just sea days! We love to go out on deck in the evenings after dinner and watch the sea and possibly wildlife. Also, we like to go in June where there is almost 24 hour daylight. We've been know to get up to use the restroom and then find ourselves on the balcony at 2 or 3 AM watching for wildlife. We feel that sleep can always wait until we get home!

Does anyone have a picture of the Princess Platter for the Star on sea days?

I can't remember who it was but someone posted a weeks worth of patters from the island July 2011 cruise here. I printed all of them off. I'm sure if you did a search you could find them.

Thanks, I'll try it. Sometimes the search on here is really bad...

The weather may be cooler in September, but when we went on the Golden last August my kids were in the pool every day! On cooler days they just used the indoor pool. We watched movies on MUTS and spent a lot of time watching for whales. It was our best whale viewing trip yet. Sometimes, a sea day near the end of the cruise is a good time to take a nap to catch up on all the sleep you've lost all week!
