We stayed at the Ambassade a few years ago and it was wonderful. This year after our cruise, we stayed at Hotel Fita a block from the Van Gogh and Riksmuseum. We loved the location and liked the museum area much better. It is a family owned hotel and is highly rated on Tripadvisor.

We stayed at the Amsterdam Convent Hotel, centrally located and within walking distance of all attractions. We had a good stay there before our Tulips and Windmills cruise last spring.

Look at reviews for this hotel on Trip Advisor.:)

We have been to Amsterdam twice and last time stayed in the Hotel Bilderberg Gardens, which was very good.

We find the main tourist area pretty seedy and much prefer the museum district and the residential area we stayed in last trip. Tram service is excellent and frequent so there is no need to be in the middle of it all unless that is what you prefer.

We have been to Amsterdam twice and both times staid at NH City Centre. It is nice and modern inside. We selected it because it has king size beds. It is in a quiet area near the flower market. About three blocks from Dam Square and half a block away from the tram line. Nice quiet and central to everything.

We also stayed at the Hotel Fita in Amsterdam in 2010. Small, family run Hotel, very clean and in quiet Museum area (Van Gogh and Riksmuseum very close by). Good rating on Trip Advisor. Easy walking area and we felt very safe when out and about. Reasonably priced as well, breakfast was included and quite good!!

We are staying at the Doubletree by Hilton beside the train station for 3 nights prior to our cruise. Is it practical to walk to the Rijksmuseun and area or should we be tramming it? Has anyone done the canal bikes and would you recommend?

A couple of years ago we stayed at the Bellevue Hotel. It is small but conveniently located close to the train station and a couple of blocks from the tour boats on Damrak. The location was perfect for us.

The staff was most helpful. We had flown in from Cape Town after a 2 month cruise. They let us store our extra luggage in an unused guest room and gave us the key to that room without charge.

It may be a good walk so maybe a tram pass would work better for you ;)

You could ask on Trip advisor there are lots of locals that will answer your questions

This is definitely a tram ride from the station. If nothing else it allows you to avoid being run over by bikes on the way there. And while you could walk it, the time it would take would not make it worth it.

We've stayed at the Ambassade, loved it and have recommended it to others. As a matter of fact, I made an advance booking just last week as a backup for our visit next April. However, there's another hotel we're interested in and will attempt to book when they open up April 2013 in a month or two - the Mauro Mansion. http://www.mauromansion.com/MAURO.html Online reviews are raves. For us, the difference is location. For a standard Amsterdam visit, the Ambassade location can't be beat, on the best part of the lovely Herengracht canal. However, for this vacation, the quirky Mauro Mansion is walkable to the ship - it's a little cheaper too.

Staying two nights in Amsterdam before our river cruise in late Sept. Looking for a good hotel in the historic area. Has anyone stayed at the Ambasade or the Toren? any other suggestions would be welcome.

We loved the Banks Mansion (which was just down the street from the flower market) and down one other block. On the canal that is named after the Kaiser.

We stayed in Amsterdam for 6 nights in May this year after our Avalon Panorama cruise Budapest to Amsterdam(fantastic cruise the best holiday!)

We stayed at Maes B&B Heerenstraat. You could not ask for a better place to stay. Ken & Vlad were excellent hosts. Breakfast was a feast every morning. When we go back to Amsterdam next year we will definitely stay there again. Enjoy your river cruise and all the tulips in Amsterdam. Cheers Lyn & Pieter.
