ninkb Posted April 17, 2012 #1 Share Posted April 17, 2012 Wondering how we get luggage from our Mestre hotel (Venice area) to the dock area. We would prefer to NOT pay for a taxi. Is there room on the bus or the train for suitcases? From the airport is not the problem since the airport bus stops at the Mestre train station. It's just getting the cruise luggage back and forth across the causeway. Your suggestions will be helpful!
euro cruiser Posted April 17, 2012 #2 Share Posted April 17, 2012 The public bus will not have luggage storage, you just cram it in with you as you would on any local bus. If you take the train you'll have the same issue, plus you'll need to get across the Grand Canal with your bags, either by walking across the pedestrian bridge or by taking a vaporetto (there is a charge for more than one bag per person on the vaporetto). I think your best best, short of a taxi, is the public bus to Piazzale Roma followed by the People Mover to the cruise port. Doing this would be greatly facilitated by judicious packing that minimizes luggage.
pete_coach Posted April 18, 2012 #3 Share Posted April 18, 2012 EuroCruiser is right, it will be a challenge. By city bus you et to Piazzele Roma and form there you have a 500 yard walk to the People Mover and from the Mover to the Port entrance you have another 500 or so yard walk. (bus fare, people mover fare) By train you get to St lucia staion where you need to take a vaporetto to Piazzele Roma nad to the People Mover thing (train fare, vaporetto fare, people mover fare). Taxi to port entrance (taxi fare about 20 to 25 euros including luggage fee). Lastly, there may be a free shuttle. Ask (email) your hotel and ask them about transportation. They are normally very good at getting answers for you. http://europeforvisitors.com/venice/articles/venice-cruise-port-transportation-ground.htm
maryann ns Posted April 19, 2012 #4 Share Posted April 19, 2012 If you each have one rolling bag and a back pack or carry on bag that will piggy back to your rolling bag, you will be fine. The local busses from Mestre are great and we have not found them to be crowded.
Carolyn R Posted April 20, 2012 #5 Share Posted April 20, 2012 Maybe you could share a taxi/van with other cruisers staying at your hotel. That would really be your best bet if you don't want to be strenuously transporting your luggage. Have you joined the roll call for your cruise? You may find others there that are staying at your hotel.
