1corona4u Posted May 1, 2005 #28 Share Posted May 1, 2005 Yeah, it's a pretty crude patch, but considering the hole, they did ok. They'd better get some more paint on it though, starting to rust.....
reeran Posted May 1, 2005 #29 Share Posted May 1, 2005 Wow.....that is an ugly patch job...... I can't believe they would wait until 2006 to fix it....that can't be totally safe.... I know I wouldn't sail on it like that..... Thats why they have muster drills and lifeboats!:D

Tankminder Posted May 1, 2005 #32 Share Posted May 1, 2005 Amazed at the amount of rust in only one week! We took pics as we got off in New Orleans and there was none of the horizontal lines of rust - only a few traces of the vertical ones. Getting off was also the first time we'd seen the repair since they did all the work behind a construction wall. I guess that's why! :)
caitlyn20 Posted May 1, 2005 #33 Share Posted May 1, 2005 The Grandeur's next scheduled drydock is not expected to be until summer 2006 at the earliest if RCCL makes the decision to stretch the Grandeur the same way Enchantment is being stretched next month. That's a long time to wait to fix the damaged area. It's not just cosmetically ugly, there is still an actual indentation in the ship's hull that no paint job is going to fix. If for nothing other than PR reasons, RCCL should not put off any permanent repairs to this ship. I think it should be done before the Baltimore sailings begin but that looks highly unlikely now. I hope she holds up in the rough Atlantic seas that she's sure to encounter on a regular basis, not to mention any possible hurricanes. They ARE going to cut the ship in half and stretch it. They announced it at one of the events I participated in.
caitlyn20 Posted May 1, 2005 #34 Share Posted May 1, 2005 So...I've been waiting patiently. Anyone know who the Captain was for this week?
CaptJackSparrow Posted May 1, 2005 #35 Share Posted May 1, 2005 This better not affect future cruises, especially during May when I'm taking my first cruise ever on the U.S.S. Minnow (Grandeur of the Seas). Who's in charge, Captain Ron??

ibncak Posted May 2, 2005 #38 Share Posted May 2, 2005 I was on this cruise and it was myself and my roommate that took those pics from the tender in Cozumel. The captain is still there and sailing this week. At the Crown and Anchor cocktail party he spoke and was extremely gracious and humble and told us that he personally apologized for our shortened vacation and said he would not put blame on anyone but himself. It takes guts to get up in front of passengers who were upset about their shortened vacations and do what he did...he received a very loud round of applause! The crew tried to do what they could to make everyone's time on board the best it could be...and I saw two jackpots go in the casino in those five days, one on the poker machine for over $1100.00 and someone hit the jackpot on the Caribbean Poker table for $21,000.00 YES, I said $21,000.00! I don't know how to play it but was in the casino when it happened. He had a royal flush and apparently would have made $1,000 more but the dealer didn't qualify??? I think he did all right without qualifying! I however donated my share to the ship's repair fund..lol. We didn't have great weather except in Cozumel and it was two days short of what we thought it would be, but when given lemons, make lemonade! I think all of us are still hoping that RCCL will come through for those of us that stuck it out when everything washes out. If any of you that have cruised a lot are looking for something different, this cruise also was a "Murder Mystery at Sea" for those that purchased that as well. It was really a fun thing and actually saved this cruise for those of us that did it. The actors were great and interacted with those involved. They would leave clues on your doors at night and visit your table at dinner in costume character. The whole thing was fun and the actors were so funny. They are doing several of these a year on different ships. They said all were sold out for this year but will have 2006 RCCL sailings they will do. Get your TA to check for you if it's something you enjoy. Our group took costumes as well and really had fun with it. There was a rumor that the ship would go into to dry dock within a month but who knows who started it or if it's true, but I would think they will have to control the rusting as well as the cosmetic damage, so sooner than later sounds realistic. Considering what it looked like when it happened, I think they performed a miracle to get it fixed enough to pass inspection and only lost two days. The people they flew in were apparently working 24/7 while we were on repairing the damaged cabins and storage areas. Ok, that's it for now. My friends stayed on for this week's cruise so if there's more news, I'll pass along what they send. Cruise Cat Posted May 2, 2005 #39 Share Posted May 2, 2005 Amazed at the amount of rust in only one week! We took pics as we got off in New Orleans and there was none of the horizontal lines of rust - only a few traces of the vertical ones. The rust is along the welds. When metal is heated like that, paint doesn't really stick to it (like a car that has been in a fire- back when they made them of metal of course). They need to give it a good sandblasting and repaint it.
TomCat32174 Posted May 2, 2005 #40 Share Posted May 2, 2005 Since the ship was in the process of docking, wouldn't the port pilot be the one responsible for the damage since he or she is in charge of all operations while a ship is docking or leaving until a certain nautical mile away from land? Cruise Cat Posted May 2, 2005 #41 Share Posted May 2, 2005 Uh... Tom - We will never all agree on this one. There are two threads (now locked) that debated this issue with expert opinions on both sides. It's probably best we all stay away from that discussion on this thread.... caitlyn20 Posted May 2, 2005 #44 Share Posted May 2, 2005 The captain is still there and sailing this week. Grandeur of the Seas 4/05NCL Spirit 1/05 That's a relief for me. I really like the guy, and if he's still there, then they must not have thought it was his fault, despite him being "responsible." Thanks for the update! yuyi64 Posted May 2, 2005 #45 Share Posted May 2, 2005 Since the ship was in the process of docking, wouldn't the port pilot be the one responsible for the damage since he or she is in charge of all operations while a ship is docking or leaving until a certain nautical mile away from land? The port pilot acts as an advisor to the captain during the approach to port and during the docking. Ship personnel remain in actual control of the ship at all times during the approach to the pier as well as the docking. Perhaps the local port pilot might have wrongly advised that a safe docking was possible, but he would in no way have been the one steering the ship when it hit the pier.
