Maasdam now has non smoking casino areas

I arrived back on the Maasdam on March 23 after a 21-day Collector's Cruise. The starboard side of the Crows Nest had ashtrays on the tables alongside the windows. I stayed aboard one day in port and decided to read up there and enjoy the view. A woman sat next to me and lit up. When the smoke drifted towards me, I moved to the port side of the Crows Nest which was non-smoking (no ashtrays on the table). Perhaps Sail was seating on the port side.

That's the way it has always been since I've been cruising with HAL. Thanks for your information Sophiebaby. :)

There was no smoking permitted at the bar and that is usually where smoking is permitted if there is any allowed. We were at Crows Nest's bar and there was no smoking. We always used to go to Crows Nest but stopped because of the smoking at the bar. If we are alone, that is where we like to sit and now we can. :)

We got off the Maasdam 4/27. We smelled smoke on the starboard side. Never really went to that side to see if there were ashtrays on the table. The smoky smell was strong, so we assumed smoking was still allowed. If smoking is no longer permitted, that would be great. If it's the case, the smell is still quite strong. I went to the bar in the crow's nest and didn't see any ashtrays on the bar.

We just left Maasdam two weeks ago and there was no smoking in Crows Nest.

Were there actually signs, lack of ashtrays, posts in the daily news, etc? It wasn't simply that there were no smokers when you were in the room? It is truly prohibited?

It's wonderful news if we can cruise again on Holland America, especially for certain itineraries that they do especially well.

Absolutely hate smoke and stopped cruising HAL because of it.

It actually can work if the division is set per the filtration, or ventilation, intakes and outputs.

Over a year ago the Captain of the Maasdam decided he wanted the bar itself to be no smoking and it was changed while we were onboard. There was still a smoking section, just not at the bar or on the port side of the CN.

Any smoke restrictions are good as far as I am concerned , might not be perfect but better than nothing. Looking forward to our Veenedam in a couple of weeks

I second this, any restriction on smoking inside is moving in the healthy direction!!!!!!!

Very glad to hear about the change in the casino on Maasdam. We are sailing her over the Christmas/New Year holidays. Last year we did Noordam and our enjoyment of the casino was practically nil. We had heavy smokers at our tables every day and one woman said to me "I just ate b-fast and have to have a cig, sorry". Yuck!!! I know the overall place still smells of cigs but not having it in my face is a big plus. I air out my clothes every night after the casino. RCI has been doing the split casino thing for a long time and it is much appreciated.

We just got back from a cruise on the Oosterdam and there were tables that had a sign "No Smoking at this table". It was so much better to sit at a table and know that a smoker wasn't going to sit down next to you.

I noticed a lot less smoking in the Casino then on previous cruises on other HAL ships. There was smoking allowed in the Sports Bar Lounge  which was right near the Casino and when you passed it you could smell the smoke. But you didn't smell it in the Casino itself.:)
