Thanks! A yard of ale after winning? Even back in the day I'da failed.

no. the yard of ale was the final contest. the team was always a guy and the girl. one cruise, the girl drank more than her partner. i still even remember her name.

i don't think i drink a yard of ale in a year!

Ah, got it. I don't drink a yard of anything in a year (well, several yards of coffee).

don't get me wrong, I love sailing on DCL for overall experience but CCL is far easier on pocketbook and has better selection of itineraries. DCL cruisers can be so clueless and snobby, many are overly invested in the mouse;) and freely dis' CCL, with total sum of their experience being a 3 day party cruise 10 years ago reinforced by their uncles' friends' trip report. While i'm being judgemental let me add that the biggest, sloppiest drunks i've seen while cruising have been upon the DCL ships = amatuer night.

we cruise dcl off season, so it doesn't cost any more than what we spend on ccl.

we just don't care for their food, and, although not gamblers, we always consider the casino the heart of the ship.

but we truly enjoy the service, the sleet ships, the stateroom size with the split bathrooms and curtain, as well as the public spaces, including animators palette.

and a day at castaway cay is just heaven.

Just for grins the Guiness Record for drinking a yard of beer is 5 seconds:eek:.

He asked what's the problem with Carnival and the guy tells him it's not a curiseline for children because they have ( Wet Tee Shirt Contest ) up on the pool deck every day.

Also they have ( Drinking Contests ) to see who can consume the most drinks in a 10 min time limit and after this is over there are so many drunk people all over the ship being rude and fighting with other passengers and puking all over the place.

They allow smoking all over the ship and you can't get away from it.

He also said that the waiters in the Dining Room dance on every table before you can finish your meal.

This is reminiscent of the Carnival of the early-80's, before Mickey Arison got stupid. This is the business model that Carnival really needs to return to.

even offseason every DCL cruise i've priced out is close to 2-1/2 times more than same cabin type & # days on CCL.

you're preaching to the choir, we own DVC and are stopping in at Beach Club Villas for several days after our upcoming cruise;) and I feel their food is better than CCL

castaway is wonderful:)and to be able to walk right off the ship even better but I do feel when it comes to actual beach grooming HMC gets the nod.

That is hysterical!!!! And so accurate.

I may have to quote you over on the DISboards the next time they get busy bashing Carnival; which should be any minute now. ;)

Let me first say that I have been asked about my take on cruising, which cruiselines I've cruised, which one's I liked, ports of call I've been to, how's the food, what there is to do, etc, etc from a guy that is one of my business suppliers, this has gone on for at least 2 years.

I've told him about Carnival as my 1st choice and also about RCI and Prnicess as these are the only 3 lines I've been on, so I could not give an opinion on any others.

Well the other day I was talking to him and he and his family booked a Disiney cruise out of Port Carnival for 7 days, he said his wife chose Disiney because they have 2 small girls and wanted to make sure that they had a nice and fun experienance on their 1st cruise.

Tom goes on to begin to tell me what a wonderful time that they all had and that they were wanting to book another cruise shortly after getting back home, ( now another cruise junkie ), but that they would like to try another cruiseline.

So in the process of talking amoung themselves while still on the Disiney cruise, he begins asking others what cruises they would recommend and came across a guy that told him DO NOT take your children on a Carnival cruise.

He also said that the waiters in the Dining Room dance on every table before you can finish your meal.

I said are you for real?

I told him out of all the 18 cruises I have never witnessed these contest nor have I ever heard of them being displayed on any cruiseship.

Tom goes on to tell me that he asked the guy how many times he had been on Carnival and the guy says never, so Tom says if you've never been on Carnival how do know that this stuff goes on.

The guy replies I was told by my sisters best friend.

Is this not the most rediculious thing you have ever heard of.

Why do people feel the need to give advise about something they know nothing about?

And yet his advisor left out my favorite contest, of course, offered only on CCL - The drunken, wet t-shirt contest where they dance on the dinner tables all while smoking, all of which happens before we are done eating! (This is also my brothers' sister's dad's best friend's contest too)

Boy, do me and my kids love it when they put on that show! :D

Seriously, not sure why people comment on anything when most of the time, they know very little, if anything, about the subject they are talking.

Neither his or his adviser's comments will damper my family's experiences with CCL. As I am sure it wont affect many others on here either.

OT but inside edition picked on RCL again last night re druken guests. Can't find the video posted yet but funny part was they did the blind intro: cruiseship full of dangerous drunks...without identifying the line for a bit. I would've put money down it was going to be CCL.

I wish Carnival was like what Tom was told lol

Maybe the guy on Disney got mixed up with his trip to Vegas... Vegas is like that ...x1000 :D

Being a heavy cruiser of both DCL and CCL - I see this sort of behavior on both sides (and shades of it in this thread!). I think often times that folks tend to develop a pack mentality. And when we pay as much as we do to vacation, we seek some sort of validation that we made the best choice. So, those loyal to Disney find all sorts of reasons to tear down the competition. And likewise, the Carnival crowd behaves similarly but because of the nature of the criticism they take, develop a defensive posture and then return the attack.

The reality is that both products are quite good for the segments they serve. Comparing the two is possible, but foolish if you think you are comparing apples to apples. You are not. You have to do your homework and decide what you want to experience on your vacation. I've seen real cheerleader types in both camps that are dead wrong about the "competition" because they only go on hearsay. If one does experience both, they may come with an agenda or don't realize they truly are two different products - even though both companies share the same mode of transportation.

I like both lines, - for different reasons. And I am proud to say without reservations (actually I DO have reservations or I'd not be allowed on board!) that I am sailing the Carnival Magic this July and then boarding the Disney Fantasy this Decemeber. My suspicion is that I will enjoy both cruises a great deal and have zero reason to bash the competition while on the other line.

Well I can say the same about Disney -- our first cruise and a great cruise , but there were more drunks on that than the Carnival trips .. #1 you can bring liquor on board not 1 bottle of wine but whatever and they do people boarding with 2-3 cases of beer, I brought 1 liter of vodka and we brought a 12 pack. #2 the booze was cheaper and they had all you can drink beer and call drinks card.

is it real family friendly for the youngest set? yes and if you love Disney and don't care about a casino it is a fantastic cruise even for the high cost. I don't think any other line could compare food wise

But I love Carnival and since our DS is a teen now he doesn't care about Disney Characters, he just wants to be able to meet other kids his age and they normally hang out and play games our friends younger kids went on Carnival for their first cruise and LOVED it and didn't even use the clubs!

now where are these wet t shirt contest I will be looking for them in 29 days!

The waiters have danced on top I the serving tables on every cruise I've been on. I never gave it any thought because it makes it much easier to see them dancing because they are elevated above everyone else.

I found this YouTube video of them dancing on top of the serving tables.

All I can say about my experiences is that I've been on Carnival and Princess & Carnival has better food (in my opinion). I have been on 5 Carnivals & 2 Princess cruises. I hate when people speak out about Carnival without getting their info straight. My motto is the worse day of cruising is so much better than working...so there!!!

DH and I are booked on our first CCL cruise next month. I'll be honest and admit we've stayed away from Carnival because of all the things we've "heard". We've done 8 RCCL and 2 Celebrity with Celebrity our favorite.

We'll be cruising with family and because of their school/work schedules and port options Carnival was our only option. This will be their first cruise. We've only done 7-13 day cruises previously and this will be a 5 day, so not quite a equal comparison.

The way I see it we have 3 possibilities....

1. Something majorly bad will happen that will leave such a bad impressions that Carnival will be completely crossed off our list.

2. We'll discover that the 3 lines are more alike than different and be just as happy on anyone of them.

3. We'll have a new favorite.

Whatever the case.......We've going with an open mind determined to have a good time with family we don't get to see often enough.

After all.......I'll be on a cruise:D

I can GUARANTEE you that if Carnival was as bad as what the op quoted, I would not cruise with them. You will find the ship decor much louder than on Royal Caribbean or Celebrity (Celebrity ships ARE really beautiful). That being said, your cruise experience, in my opinion, will be very similar. You will have a great time.

Have cruised Carnival 13 out of our 26 cruises. Three booked on Carnival for the remainder of this year.

Our grandchildren love Carnival. We have watched them grow from age 3 and 5 to 16 and 12 and they always have a great time.

Never witnessed a drinking contest.

Smoking is now prohibited in stateroom and only allowed in designated areas on the ships.

Never witnessed dining room employees dancing on the tables. they do dance around the dining room and this is often joined by cruises. children love this.

All in all Carnival is a great experience. This past Christmas the ship in Jacksonville was loaded with families and children, all seeming to have a wonderful time.

Shirley

On the Legend a couple of years ago, they had a Conga line going in the MDR after dinner. My four kids (ages 10 - 16) joined in (something they NEVER would have done at a land-based function) and had a BLAST!

I think that Carnival's food and Princess's food are on the same level...but you pay SO much more for Princess that Carnival is obviously the better deal.

Personally, while I enjoyed my Disney cruise, the food in the main dining rooms was borderline awful. Especially considering what you pay for a Disney cruise.

The only differences I experienced between CCL and RCI were the actual ships. Passengers acted the same on both cruise lines. I enjoyed both lines, but CCL prices put them on top for me. It also seemed like Carnival offered more activities that interested me.

Booze is a significant revenue generator for cruise lines. Every cruise I've been on has had "specials" on alcohol to promote sales. Every cruise line I've been on I've seen some "happy" drunks. This isn't exclusive to CCL or any other cruise line.

Generally speaking, I won't go on a Disney cruise. My family was never one to subscribe to the whole "Mickey, Minny, Goofy, Snow White, etc" cast of characters. Plus, I never subscribed to taking my small children on a cruise.

So, if you like a bunch of small children on a cruise, and you like Disney characters, then that's the cruise for you. If not, there are plenty of move attractive and viable alternatives I'd choose, including Carnival.
