Peewee1414 Posted May 5, 2012 #1 Share Posted May 5, 2012 Hi I am just thinking about how we are going to keep in touch on our upcoming cruise on Idependence next week, is it possible to rent phones on board? I read some ships have them, are walkie talkies allowed and if so are they any good? Any other ideas of how to keep in touch?

Some ships used to have DECT (wireless) phones for rent at Guest Services. The cost was something like $25 per cruise. I know Oasis and Allure have iPhone type phones for rent, but I don't think these have made it to other ships yet. Quantity of the DECT phones was limited, so go to Guest Services as soon as you board to inquire about these.
cb at sea Posted May 5, 2012 #3 Share Posted May 5, 2012 It's not as hard as you think to find each other....the majority of the ship is cabin hallway/space...no need to go to any but your own hallway. You'll find that you will gravitate to the same places over and over, and making tentative plans will allow everyone to know where everyone else is likely to be. For instance....hubby knows I'll be at the pool from 10-2....he'll be in the casino, we'll meet for lunch on the pool deck and eat together......just examples. If I change my plans, I'll leave a note in the cabin, so he'll know where I am. Carrying around a phone or walkie-talkie (especially for kids) is a huge pain! Transmitting radio signals on a steel ship is hit or miss with the type of walkie talkies available for the public. They work best in open areas with good lines of sight, so up on the pool deck or other outside areas they may work okay but not if you try to contact someone inside the ship. Inside the ship it is a crap shoot. You will see the ships crew talking on radios all over the ship but their radios are different from walkie talkies and operate on a repeater or on a digital system so that they work anywhere on the ship. I hear alot of folks just use post it notes to leave messages on and leave them on the mirror in the cabin.

You could review the next day's schedule at night and tell everyone in your group where you plan to be at what time (e.g., pool 10-1, bingo 2-3, etc.). You might just plan to meet up for lunch at a certain time or even just dinner - I mean, how joined at the hip do you intend to be?
johneeo Posted May 5, 2012 #6 Share Posted May 5, 2012 Hi Any other ideas of how to keep in touch? I try to hide from everyone. But, they always find me. Do not worry about keeping in touch. On a sea day, most will be at the pool. Dinner time, you should all be together. You then set times to meet for lunch, bingo, trivia, whatever.
